Seniors Spectacular In Series Opener Against Clarks Summit

Box Score (CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – It was successful senior day for the men in Wilson Blue as the home team took care of business against Clarks Summit for the home finale. The Phoenix pounded out 26 hits and scored in all but one inning to down the Defenders in seven innings.

Prior to the game seniors Shane Bowie (Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson), Justin Fleig (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin), Briar Castellow (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin), Jack Vener (Easton, Md. / St. Michael's), Haden Hoff (Westminster, Md. / Westminster), Ryan Green (Fulton, Md. / Reservoir), Jordan McKenzie (White Plains, Md. / North Point), Peyton Taylor (Worton, Md. / Kent County), Hunter Griebel (Stevensville, Md. / Kent Island), and Brady Andre (Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) were all honored.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 19, Clarks Summit 1

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 17-15, 11-5 Skye; Clarks Summit 4-32, 2-14 Skye

How It Happened
  • The tone was set fairly early as Harry Middlebrooks (FY, Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) tripled to right center. It was the first of three consecutive extra-base hits as McKenzie added a double and Jordan Daphney (Jr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) hit an opposite field triple. While Taylor didn't continue the trend, he still made contact for a sacrifice fly to score Daphney and put Wilson up 3-0.
  • McKenzie got in on the scoring again in the second inning as he lined one up the middle to score Hoff and Middlebrooks. McKenzie later scored on a single by Andre for a 6-0 lead. He wasn't done as two innings later he led off with a home run to left field. Three batters later Andre followed suit with a two-run shot for a 9-1 lead.
  • RBI Doubles by Middlebrooks and Daphney highlighted a five-run fifth inning. Taylor then set off some fireworks with a three-run blast to left field to spark another five-run frame in the sixth.
  • Of course, it wasn't all offense that shined for the Phoenix. The defense shined as well as the battery allowed just five hits and one unearned run in the contest. Vener started the game and was nearly untouchable as he struck out six of the 10 batters he faced. With a pre-determined outing, he received the win to improve to 2-2 on the season.
  • Fellow seniors Bowie, Griebel and Castellow carried the Phoenix the rest of the way. Bowie and Griebel both fanned a pair before Castellow entered to record the final out of the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • At the plate, Wilson seniors went a combined 15-for-22 for an average of .682. It resulted in 13 RBI and 12 runs scored.
  • McKenzie provided a heavy slice of the aforementioned as he went 4-for-5 with four RBI and five runs scored. Taylor was also a key contributor with five RBI and three runs scored on a 3-for-4 afternoon.
  • Daphney helped move the train along with a perfect 5-for-5 day with two RBI and four runs scored.
  • The Phoenix finished with 10 extra base hits. Three of them were home runs and two were triples.
  • Wilson improved to 11-0 all-time against Clarks Summit.
