Baseball Closes Season With Loss At Brandywine In Playoffs

(ASTON, Pa.) – The baseball season came to a close as No. 9 Wilson fell to No. 8 Penn State Brandywine in the first round of the United East Championship on Tuesday. The Phoenix got off to a hot start with four runs in the top of the first, but were quickly answered by the Lions and limited at the plate the rest of the way.

The Basics

Score: No. 9 Wilson 6, No. 8 Penn State Brandywine 7

Venue: MSI Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 7-26-1, Penn State Brandywine 15-17-2

How It Happened
  • Everything went right for the Phoenix in the first half inning as three hits and three errors led to four runs. Cody Valentine (Jr., Fairfield, Pa. / St. Andrews) drove in the first run as Garrett Drish (FY, Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) scored on his single to right. Samuel Martin (Jr., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C. ) also circled around after an errant throw by the right fielder. A double steal then allowed Valentine to score before Jordan Stucki (Jr., Costa Mesa, Calif. / Costa Mesa / Greenville) singled to left to score Justin Clapp (Jr., Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Beach / Cal State Monterey Bay ). The Lions nearly equaled that as they plated three on a pair of hits and an error.
  • Neither team scored again until the fifth. Valentine added another RBI on a sacrifice to center to score Drish, but Brandywine was able to tie the game on three hits in the bottom half. The Lions went on to score solo runs in the sixth and seventh to take the lead.
  • Wilson threatened to tie the game and had the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the ninth. A wild pitch gave Martin new life as he reached first safely on a strikeout. After stealing second, he scored on a Drish single up the middle. He was left stranded as Brandywine struck out the last batter to end the game.
Inside The Numbers
  • Drish finished the day going 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs, and a walk.
  • Wilson moved quite a bit on the base paths with a season-best nine stolen bases in the game.
