Comeback Comes Up Short For Baseball At St. Mary's

(ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.) – A late rally saw Wilson tie St. Mary's, but the Phoenix couldn't get over the hump as the Seahawks scored three in the seventh and eighth for the win. The Phoenix trailed by four entering the sixth before push to tie it up in the next two innings only to see the Seahawks spoil the comeback attempt.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 4, St. Mary's 7

Venue: Hawk's Nest

Records: Wilson 4-21-1, 3-8 UE; St. Mary's 8-15, 4-5 UE

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's scored twice in the first and two more in the fifth for its 4-0 lead. Wilson finally was able to generate some momentum in the sixth which resulted in loading the bases. Walks were then issued to Samuel Martin (Jr., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) and Seth Bivens (Sr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) to bring in Tyler O'Brien (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) and Joe Nawrocki (So., Parkton, Md. / Calvert Hall) to make it 4-2. Momentum carried into the seventh were the Phoenix created some two-out lightning with Garrett Drish (FY, Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) driving in O'Brien and Cody Valentine (Jr., Fairfield, Pa. / St. Andrews) on a base hit up the middle.
  • Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the Seahawks were able to counter in the bottom half. An infield error helped load the bases and a hit batter forced in the go-ahead run. Wilson was able to get out of the jam with the bases loaded, but the hosts added two more on three hits in the eighth.
Inside The Numbers
  • Nawrocki and Drish both had multiple hit games to lead the Phoenix at the dish.
  • Wilson batters were walked a season-high 13 times. Three were issued to Bivens. Five were walked twice.
