Offense Erupts as Baseball Sweeps Defenders

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team wrapped up regular season CSAC play with a monster offensive showing at Clarks Summit this afternoon. The Phoenix (27-9, 10-2 CSAC) took the opening game of the doubleheader by a score of 30-0 and finished off the nightcap with a 41-2 victory over the Defenders (1-26, 1-11 CSAC).

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix scored at least one run in each inning with the exception of the 5th inning. Junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) started the onslaught with a 3-run homerun in the 1st inning that plated senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) and junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, ). Three more runs came home in the 2nd with the big blow coming from the bat of Marrale who ripped an RBI-double to left that scored senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ). A four-run 3rd inning featured an RBI-triple from freshman Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS) and a 2-RBI double by Marrale. The 4th inning produced the most runs of the game as 7 Phoenix crossed home plate. Four doubles in the inning and each resulted in runs scored as freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS), sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS), and senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) joined the hit parade. Marrale tagged his third RBI-double in as many at-bats to push the score to 15-0. After an unusually quiet 5th inning, the bats were back at it in the sixth as the Phoenix posted six more runs on the scoreboard. Mercer recorded a bases clearing double and Seidleck smashed a 2-run homerun to move the advantage to 23-0. Single runs crossed the plate in the 7th and 8th innings, but the visitors would add five more in the 9th. Not to be overlooked by the offensive production was the outstanding performance on the bump by senior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ). 15 more strikeouts in today's start pushed Nolet over the 100 strikeout mark for the season and he currently leads the nation in strikeouts with 110.
