Phoenix Outdone By Wildcats

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Wilson College and Cazanovia College squared off in women's hoops this afternoon in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The visiting Wildcats defeated the Phoenix by a 96-78 final score.

A pair of scoring runs in the first quarter, of 7-0 and 8-0 for the Wildcats was the difference in an otherwise close games. Midway through the first quarter the Wildcats used the 7-0 run, capped off by a bucket in the paint by D'Andrea Watson, to take an 11-3 lead. The lead would grow to as many as 15 in the quarter but a three-point basket by freshman 
Ashley Henderson  (Waldorf, Md. , North Point ) beat the buzzer to cut the deficit to 12 points at  24-12. During the second quarter the lead would reach as many as 18 points for the Wildcats, but an 8-0 run by the Phoenix, highlighted by a three-point basket by junior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md. , Milford Mill Academy ), cut the deficit to 10 points. A pair of Henderson free throws with just over 2 minutes to go in the half pulled the Phoenix within 8 points, but the Wildcats would hit the final buckets of the quarter to take a 45-33 lead into the half. The Phoenix would draw no closer in the second half as the Wildcats would go on for the 96-78 win.

For the game, the Phoenix placed 4 players in double digit points, led by freshman
Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) with 21 points. Henderson would add a season high 20 points, while freshman Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and sophomore Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md. , Maurice J McDonough ) added 13 and 10 points respectively. Freshman Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) grabbed a career high 9 rebounds for the Phoenix. The Wildcats were led by Skylar Girard with 33 points and Kelli Shepardson added a double-double h 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Phoenix move to 2-14 overall on the season and 0-13 in NEAC play, while the Wildcats improve to 4-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Wilson will be back in action on Thursday, February 4 at PSU Berks.
