(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A strong second half propelled Wilson by Lancaster Bible as the Phoenix picked up a big win in United East competition on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix trailed at the half, but a suffocating defense in the second quarter helped flip the momentum and Wilson was able to excel from there in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 76, Lancaster Bible 67
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 13-9, 6-4 UE; Lancaster Bible 8-15, 6-5 UE
How It Happened
- Although the Phoenix trailed 17-13 after one, you could feel things were starting to change as Lancaster Bible didn't score a basket until there was 2:50 left in the frame. Coincidentally, Wilson immediately answered the Chargers' first made basket in the second with three consecutive baskets to tie it. It started with a Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) layup, was followed by a Jewels Torres (Sr., York, PA / Yest York) layup, and capped with a Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shennsburget) layup.
- While the Chargers added another field goal before the break, the atmosphere started to benefit the Phoenix. Coming out in the second half, Torres immediately gave the Blue and White the lead as she was fouled on a game-tying layup and converted the following and-one free throw. Wilson went on to score the next six points as well to go up 36-29 before the Chargers eventually got on the mark midway through the period. LBC cut the deficit down to single possession before Wilson built the advantage back up to seven as Forrester beat the buzzer on a tiponn.
- That lead built up to as many as 15, but the Phoenix weren't out of the woods just yet. Perimeter shooting helped LBC get back into contention as the visitors made five 3-pointers.
Inside The Numbers
- Laubach finished with 18 points. She was 7-for-16 overall with six rebounds and an assist.
- Torres and Forrester matched each other with 15 points each. For Forrester, she was a force on the glass as well as the chalked up 12 boards for the double-double.
- Lae Black (Sr., Laurel, Md. /Meade) had another strong day as she was a rebound shy of a double-doouble.
- LBC was paced by Emily Wilson who tallied 8-for-7 for 13 points.
