Lions Stop Phoenix in Women's Hoops

Box Score

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted the Lions of Bryn Athyn in North Eastern Athletic Conference play tonight and fell to the Lions by a final score of 72-59.

In a game that was back and forth most of the night, and despite a spirited effort, the Phoenix weren't able to overcome some foul trouble and turnovers. The Lions jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before senior
Morgan Wonders   (Newville, Pa. , Big Spring ) got the Phoenix on the board with a bucket in the paint. Back to back baskets by freshman Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) gave the Phoenix their first lead of the game 8-6 with six minutes left in the opening quarter. The two teams would battle to a 15-15 tie after one. After a pair of baskets gave the Lions a 19-15 lead in the second quarter, the Phoenix went on a 13-2 run capped off by a basket by junior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md. , Milford Mill Academy ) to grab their largest lead of the game at 28-21. The Lions, however, would end the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 36-30 lead at the half.

The Phoenix would open the third quarter on a 6-0 run to even the game at 36-36 with just over nine minutes remaining. The Lions would respond with a 9-0 run that ended courtesy of a jumper by freshman
Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina), but the Lions still led 45-38 with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. The visitors would push the lead to 56-45 after three quarters. The Phoenix would get no closer in the fourth quarter as the Lions would go on for the 72-59 victory.

For the game, the Phoenix offense was led by Day with 20 points and Purvis, who just missed a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Wonders added 8 points and 11 rebounds and freshman
Ashley Henderson ( Waldorf, Md. , North Point ) added 8 points as well. Kristina Clark tallied a double-double for the Lions with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 2-12 overall and 0-11 in the NEAC, while the Lions improve to 10-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Wilson will be back on the court this Friday when they travel to take on Lancaster Bible College at 8:00 p.m.
