Phoenix Shine in Opener

LANGHORNE, Pa - The Wilson College women's basketball team opened the season with a 60-45 victory on the road at Cairn University.

An impressive collegiate debut by freshmen Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) and a solid performance from senior Morgan Wonders (Newville, Pa. , Big Spring ) sparked the Phoenix offense as the three of them combined for 55 of the teams 60 points. Purvis led the way with a double-double as scored a team high 22 points and collected a team high 14 rebounds, along with 4 steals and 2 blocks. Day scored 21 points and added 3 boards. Wonders tallied a double-double also as she picked up 12 points and 13 boards.

Both teams went back and forth in the opening minutes of the first quarter and were tied at 8 a piece until the Phoenix used a 7-0 run over the last 3:21 to take a 15-8 lead. Balanced scoring was the story in the second quarter for the Phoenix as 5 players would get in the scoring column including freshman Ashley Henderson (Waldorf, Md. , North Point ), who would knock down the first three point shot as the lead was extended to 11 points at the half. The Highlanders would try to cut into the lead in the third quarter and got as close as 4 points but back to back three pointers by Day would push the lead back to 10. In the fourth quarter the Highlanders again would make it interesting by cutting the lead to 4 points, however an 11-0 run by the Phoenix over a four minute span late in the game would push the lead to 15 points and that would be the final margin of victory.

The Highlanders offense was paced by Amie Eppolito with 17 points and Aigner Bookard with 17 points.

With the win, the Phoenix move to 1-0 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 0-1.

Wilson will be back in action at home on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. versus Penn State Mont Alto.
