Phoenix Fall To Gophers

Box Score (SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.) -  The Wilson women's lacrosse team may have been on the short end of the scoreboard, but the Phoenix showed steady improvement in a loss to Goucher on Wednesday. The Phoenix scored a season-high in goals and scored in every quarter and matched the Gophers in the fourth quarter with four goals each.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 9, Goucher 17

Venue: Robb Sports Complex

Records: Wilson 0-7, Goucher 3-3

How It Happened
  • The Gophers opened up with the first two scores before Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambuersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) found the back of the net on a dish from Emily Young (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) to make it a 2-1 contest with 5:23 to go in the first. However, the visitors were able to counter with the next five goals for a 7-1 headed to the second.
  • Special teams played a big part of the second quarter as Wilson took advantage of a cards dealt to the Gophers. Alyvia Henneman (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) scored the first of two player goals for the Phoenix as her eight-meter shot rang true. After a pair of Gopher goals, Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) added another score with 5:15 to go until halftime.
  • The third quarter opened up with Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) hitting paydirt with a shorthanded goal just 38 seconds into the frame. Goucher was able to score the next three before Marek found Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) to close the quarter.
  • Wilson was able to build off the momentum from Fike's late score as Sage Lague (Sr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) benefitted from an eight-meter shot 40 seconds into the fourth. Fike then added her second of the day on another dish from Marek to make it 13-7. Lague added her second and Young scored as well, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Inside The Numbers
  • Fike, Lague and Marek finished with three points each to lead the team offensively.
  • Riley Lemay (So., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) had a strong day defensively with five ground balls.
  • Lague was impressive on the start with four draw controls. Gamby-Mickey was right behind her with three.
  • Fike was well-versed across the field. In addition to her attack abilities she added two ground balls, caused two turnovers, and won three draw controls.
Up Next
The Phoenix will be back in action as they head to Reading to take on Albright at noon on Saturday.
