(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The final chapter in the women's lacrosse rivalry between Wilson and Bryn Athyn went down to the wire similar to the close contests that preceded Saturday's United East Championship semifinal. Two weeks ago the Phoenix were the beneficiaries of a golden goal in an overtime victory against the Lions.
Saturday's showdown seemed destined for an extra frame again, but the Lions converted a last-second free position attempt to stun the Phoenix faithful in heartbreaking fashion.
The Basics
Score: No. 2 Wilson 9, No. 3 Bryn Athyn 10
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 4-11, Bryn Athyn 8-4
How It Happened
- The Lions took the early advantage as a pair of free-position attempts helped them take a 2-0 lead six minutes into the contest. Wilson eventually found its rhythm and lit up the scoreboard midway through as Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) found the back of the net. Three minutes later Sage Lague (Sr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti) took the feed from Emily Young (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) to tie the game. Bryn Athyn had the last word with another couple of goals for a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
- Another Bryn Athyn goal opened the second before Wilson gained some momentum and answered just over a minute later as Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) score with Young providing the helper once again. Defense ramped up and left both teams scoreless for the next eight minutes until Lague put the Phoenix within a goal. The Lions closed out the frame once again with a powerplay goal for a 6-4 lead at the break.
- Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) and Alyvia Henneman (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) opened up the second-half with back-to-back goals on dishes from Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) and Lague, respectively, to tie the game. The Lions went back up two over the next nine minutes, but Henneman was able to tie the game back up with the next two stretching into the early moments of the fourth quarter.
- Despite being a player down, Lague took advantage of a free-position attempt and scored to give Wilson a 9-8 lead with 10 minute to go in regulation. Unfortunately, Bryn Athyn wasn't done and tied the game with 6:23 to go in the game. Wilson's late chances to regain the lead were staved away, and following a timeout the Lions were able to flip the field and give them one last chance in regulation. Shooting space awarded them a chance from the eight-meter mark and Sabrina Brock made it count as time expired.
