Women's Lacrosse Drop Season Opener at Marymount

Box Score (ARLINGTON, Va.) – The Wilson women's lacrosse team's season opened today near the nation's capital against a highly talented Marymount squad on a chilly afternoon. The Saints showed their skill early by jumping out to an early lead and holding the Phoenix off the scoreboard until late to take the victory.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Marymount 21

Venue: Long Bridge Park

Records: Wilson 0-1, Marymount 1-0

How It Happened
  • It was a tough start for the Wilson Blue and White as Marymount opened up a three-goal lead in the opening moments with a pair of free position scores. Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) won the fourth draw control of the game, but the Phoenix were unable to take advantage as a turnover gave the Saints control. A Marymount miscue left Wilson with control shortly after and Gamby-Mickey was able to take a shot, but it went wide. The Saints' momentum didn't slow down and they took a 10-0 lead after the first period.
  • Wilson was able to slow the Saints' attack down in the third and fourth frames, but the Phoenix attack was limited the rest of the way. They eventually got on the scoreboard as Alaina Marek (So., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) found the back of the net with 88 seconds left in the contest.
Inside The Numbers
  • Marek's goal was the eighth of her career. She has scored at least a point in 12 of the 15 games in her collegiate career. She also scored in last year's season opening win against La Roche.
  • Gamby-Mickey had a solid game as she was responsible for three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Trinity Brown (So., Laurel, Md. / Resevoir) and Riley Lemay (So., Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) both had caused turnovers for the back line.
  • Sadie Fike (So., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) and Maggie Greeley (FY, Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) registered ground balls for the Phoenix.
Up Next
The Phoenix will be back in action this weekend as they head to Center Valley to take on DeSales. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
