Baseball Torches Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team hosted the University of Valley Forge in CSAC action this afternoon at Henninger Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played on the road at Valley Forge, but was moved to Henninger Field due to unplayable field conditions. The Phoenix (18-7, 6-2 CSAC) won both ends of the doubleheader by a score of 18-2 in the opener and 2-0 in the night cap over the Patriots (5-15, 2-4 CSAC).

How It Happened in Game 1: The offense got going early for the Phoenix as senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) smashed a double to left-center to bring home junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) for the first run of the game. Two more runs would cross the plate for the Phoenix courtesy of hit batters and passed balls to make the score 3-0. After quiet second and third innings, the Phoenix erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning. Four extra base hits in the inning did the damage as freshmen Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS) and Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS), along with senior Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) each drilled doubles. The big blow of the inning came off of the bat of Buchanan as he crushed a three-run homerun to left center field. In the inning, the Phoenix totaled eight hits and sent 12 batters to the plate as the hosts pushed their lead to 10-0. In the next inning, Seidleck and sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ) recorded an RBI each off of a walk and hit-by-pitch respectively to push the advantage to 12-0. Five more runs came across in the sixth as sophomore Justin Fleig (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin HS) and fifth year senior Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., ) recorded RBI's in the inning as the lead grew to 17-0. The Phoenix would tack on another run in the eighth and closed out the game with an 18-2 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Buchanan paced the Phoenix with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate including his 3rd homerun of the season. He also scored 3 runs and recorded 4 RBI. The team recorded 18 runs to tie a season high and tallied 7 extra base hits and 4 stolen bases. Freshman Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) won his 8th game of the season after working 5 scoreless innings while striking out 11.

How It Happened Game 2: In the nightcap, the Phoenix jumped on the board early again as senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) started things off with a single and stole second. Buchanan stayed hot with his fourth hit of the day and drove home Curry for the 1-0 lead. After a single by sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS), Seidleck drove a single to left center that brought home Buchanan to make it 2-0. That would be all of the runs the Phoenix would get and it would be all of the runs that senior pitcher Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ) would need. The Phoenix hurler would sit down six of the first nine batters he faced via strikeout and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. Nolet would continue to dominate the Patriots as he struck out two more batters in the fifth and sixth innings before striking out the side in the eighth inning and closing out the game by striking out three more Patriots in the ninth for the 2-0 win.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Curry led an offensive attack that totaled 11 hits with a 3-for-5 effort at the dish. Buchanan and Seidleck recorded the two RBI. Nolet had his best outing in a Phoenix uniform as he set a new Wilson College record for strikeouts in a game with 18, topping his own mark of 17 strikeouts versus Keystone last season. He allowed 0 runs and just 2 hits while walking 1 as he improved to 6-0 on the season.
