Baseball Edged By Saints

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilson College baseball team was on the road this afternoon for a non-conference match-up with Marymount University. The Saints (22-12) edged the Phoenix (23-9) by a final score of 6-5.

How It Happened: The offense started things off with a blast as senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) crushed a homerun over the left field fence to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead. A quick response by the Saints followed as a pair of soft singles and a combination of a wild pitch and passed ball led to a pair of runs as the hosts reclaimed the lead 2-1. In the bottom of the second, a pair of walks and a single led to another run for the Saints to push the margin to 3-1. Trouble continued for the Phoenix in the bottom of the third, as the Saints loaded the bases with no outs. A strike out and a force out at home had the Phoenix on the brink of getting out of the jam, but a 2-RBI single followed by a fielding error grew the hosts lead to 6-1. Besides the first inning homerun, the Phoenix bats were silent through the first four innings, but that changed in the top of the fifth. Junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) led off with a double to right center and scored off a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS) to cut the deficit to 6-2. Control issues for the Saints in the sixth and patience at the plate by the Phoenix set up a rally. Four straight walks to open the frame eventually led to a sacrifice fly by sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ) to make the score 6-3. Andre followed with an RBI-single that scored senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ). The final run of the inning came courtesy of an RBI single by freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS) that scored Mercer and made it a 6-5 ballgame. Cook reached second base in the seventh inning, but that would be the last time either team put a runner in scoring position as the Saints closed out the game with a 6-5 win.

Inside the Box Score: Cook and Daniels each tallied 2 hits and an RBI for the game. Andre recorded a hit and 2-RBI. Freshman Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) suffered just his 2nd loss of the season as he allowed a season high 7 hits and gave up a season high 5 earned runs in 3 innings of work.

Up Next: The Phoenix close out the home portion of the regular season schedule with a non-conference double-header versus Juniata tomorrow with game 1 at 1:00 p.m.
