Baseball Takes Down #8 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md - The Wilson College baseball team hit the road today to take on Salisbury University, the #8 ranked team in the nation. A solid pitching performance by senior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ) and a furious rally in the 9th inning pushed the Phoenix (22-8) past the Seagulls (24-8) by a final score of 9-7.

How It Happened: The big bats in the Phoenix lineup were hot in today's match-up. Senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) got things going in the 1st inning with an infield single. Junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, ) followed with a single to right center. An RBI-single by senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) provided the third straight hit for the Phoenix and drove home Cook for a 1-0 lead. In the 4th, the Phoenix got a single from sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ) who would later score on a hit by freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS) to put the guests up 2-0. Nolet was dealing from the hill as the southpaw, who leads the nation in strikeouts, took a no-hitter into the 6th inning. Trailing by 2 runs in the 6th, the Seagulls offense finally broke through and took advantage of a couple of hits, a pair of walks and a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead. After a quiet top half of the 7th, the Seagulls capitalized on a defensive miscue in the bottom half to plate 3 unearned runs and extend their lead to 6-2. The rally for the Phoenix came in the 9th inning as the team sent 10 hitters to the plate. Marralle led off with a single and advanced to third when Hoff drilled a double to center field. Sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS) followed with an RBI-single. After a pitching change by the Seagulls, Daniels singled through the left side to bring home Hoff and just like that the Phoenix pulled within 6-4 and had the tying run on base with 1 out. Down to their final out and facing the nations #1 team in fielding percentage, the Phoenix forced an error by the Seagulls and took full advantage. With the bases loaded, senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) drew an RBI-walk and then Cook followed with a 2-RBI shot to center field that plated  senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., ) and Daniels as the Phoenix reclaimed the lead 7-6. A double steal by Cook and Curry brought home the next run and Marrale capped off the scoring with his second hit of the inning, this time a double that scored Cook for a 9-6 advantage. However, the Seagulls would not go away quietly. A walk and a hit batter put the tying run on first base with no outs. After a pitching change, the next two Seagulls were hit by a pitch bringing home a run and keeping the bases loaded with still no outs. In need of a huge defensive play, the Phoenix got one as a lined shot was snagged by Curry at shortstop and tossed over to freshman Ryan Torres (Baltimore, MD, Archbishop Curley HS) at second base for a big time double play. Senior Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield), who came on in relief, got the next batter to pop out to second base as the Phoenix secured the upset victory, 9-7.

Inside the Box Score: The top five hitters in the Phoenix line-up combined for 9 hits. Marrale led the way with a 3 hit effort while Cook added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Nolet went 5 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs while striking out 2. Fifth year senior Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., ) picked up the win in relief and Ivey worked out of the bases loaded jam in the ninth to collect the save. This was the first win over a top-10 ranked team in program history. The win marks the 22nd victory for the Phoenix, which is also a new program record.

Up Next: Wilson will host Central Penn on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the senior day game.
