Baseball Splits CSAC Opener with Keystone

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - On a cold and windy afternoon at Henninger Field, the Wilson College baseball team squared off against pre-season CSAC favorite Keystone College. The Phoenix (12-3, 1-1 CSAC) took game one versus the Giants (6-10, 1-1 CSAC) by a final score of 3-1, but fell in the night cap by a final score of 4-3.

How It Happened Game 1: Senior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ) was dealing on the mound for the Phoenix the entire game as he tallied 7 strikeouts out of the first 9 outs of the game. The Phoenix used a 2-out rally in the bottom of the third to break the game open as senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) tripled to right field and came home when junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) blasted a ball over the right field fence for his first homerun of the season to put the hosts up 2-0. That would be all the offense Nolet would need as he pitched a perfect fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the top of the seventh, the Giants got on the board with a homerun, but Nolet set down the next three batters in order and finished the afternoon allowing one 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 12 Giants. In the bottom of the eighth, the Phoenix would add an insurance run as junior Michael Mcgee (Frederick, MD., Thomas Johnson) lead off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by fifth year senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ), and came home on an RBI single by Mercer. Freshman Michael Hippchen (Silver Spring, MD, St John's College HS) entered the game in the eighth inning throwing BB's as he sat down the final six Giants and closed the game out by striking out the side to record the save and seal the 3-1 victory in the opener.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Mercer paced the offense with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with 3 RBI and a run scored. Cook, McGee, and sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS) each recoded a hit in the win. Nolet improved to 4-0 on the season and Hipchen recorded his first save of the season.

How It Happened Game 2: Game 2 saw the Phoenix jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Andre led off with a single to left and came around to score on a single to left by freshman Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ) as both runners advanced on an error by the Giants left fielder. Hoff crossed the plate on an RBI double by sophomore Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS) giving the Phoenix a 2-0 advantage. Neither offense generated much of a threat over the next few innings until the Giants got on the board in the top of the fifth. A walk and three straight bunts loaded the bases and brought a run home to make the score 2-1. A two-run single would follow giving the visitors a 3-2 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Giants tacked on an important run with a three hit inning to push their lead to 4-2. The Phoenix responded in the bottom of the sixth as senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) reached base and moved around to third and later scored on an RBI single by fifth year senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., ) to make the score 4-3. The Phoenix would strand two runners on base in the sixth and eighth innings and left the tying run on base in the ninth as the Giants closed out the 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Cook, Mercer, Buchanan, Andre, Hoff, Procopio, Seidleck and freshman Ryan Torres (Baltimore, MD, Archbishop Curley HS) each recoded 1 hit for the Phoenix. Freshman Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) suffered his first setback of the season after allowing 4 runs in 5 innings of work.

Up Next: Wilson will host Penn State Altoona in non-conference action on Wednesday with game 1 at 1:00 p.m.
