Phoenix Win Over Wildcats

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team hosted two games this afternoon against the visiting Penn College Wildcats in non-conference doubleheader action. The Phoenix (11-2, 0-0 CSAC) were victorious over the Wildcats (6-6,0-0 United East) with final scores of 10-5 and 7-6. 

Game One: Wilson would start the day trailing 3-0 after the first inning of play. Heading into the bottom of the second the Phoenix worked to chip away at the Wildcats lead as senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, Montgomery CC (MD)) would blast a home run past left-center to earn the first run of the day, followed shortly after sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS)  would hit a double and earning an RBI to bring the score to 3-2. Andre would continue to be productive for the Phoenix in the bottom of the fourth inning he would earn another RBI as well as advance a runner home while stealing second. Wilson continued to build as fifth-year KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) also earns an RBI after nailing a double out to second and bringing freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS) home to put the score at 5-3.  The Phoenix lead was short-lived as Penn College was able to tie the game at five after a two-run home run in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) joined in on the home run fun hitting a grand slam to secure the Wilson win 10-5. 

Inside the Box Score: Marrale had the big bat for the Phoenix today having one hit and earning four RBIs off some grand slam action. Buchanan and sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, Fairmont State Univ.) each earned two runs apiece for Wilson leading the teams with runs earned.  Andre had two hits and two RBIs on three at-bats. Wilson's pitcher Michael Hippchen (Silver Spring, MD, St John's College HS) earned his second win of the season after coming in at the top of the fifth to earn six strikeouts and allowing just one hit on the day.

Game Two: Senior Max Little (Crestview, FL., Spangdahlem) started on the mound for the Phoenix and would make quick work of the first 10 Penn College batters allowing no hits over three innings. The Wilson offense would capitalize on this to build their lead to 4-0 heading into the top of the fourth. The Wildcats managed to chip their way back into the game after a two-run home run and two RBIs to take the lead 5-4. Penn College expanded their lead in the top of the fifth inning, earning another run to make the score 6-4. Wilson worked their way back into the game with an RBI from junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) to bring the Phoenix within one. Bottom of the sixth inning, freshman Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS) hit a ball out to right-center field to bring sophomore Bryan DeCarlo (Gaithersburg, MD, Hagerstown CC (MD)) home to tie the game at six. Late in the bottom of the seventh inning, fifth-year Jacob Whittington (Salisbury, MD., Univ. of the Sciences) hit a game-winning walk-off out to left field bringing Hoff across the plate to secure a 7-6 victory for the Phoenix. 

Inside the Box Score: Senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) was the team's leading scorer earning two runs after being walked twice. Mercer would end the night with two hits and two RBIs on four at-bats. Freshman pitcher Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) earned his fifth win of the season improving to 5-0 after facing four batters and earning two strikeouts in a little over an inning of play. 

Up Next:  Wilson will host their first conference action against Keystone College (5-9, 0-0 CSAC) on Saturday, March 19 at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
