Baseball Opens Season with Sweep of Bison

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilson College baseball team opened the season in style with a pair of non-conference victories over Gallaudet University. The Phoenix (2-0) took game one by a final score of 10-2 and finished the sweep with a 12-3 victory in game two over the Bison (1-3). 

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix got things going with a five run second inning. Junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, ) led off with a double to right field. With runners on 2nd and 3rd base, senior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) smashed a 2-RBI double to left center to drive in the first runs of the season. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, senior Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., ) tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0. Fifth year senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) followed with a sacrifice fly of his own and senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) drove in the final run of the inning with a triple to left field. The Bison responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs to pull within 5-2. In the fourth inning, the Phoenix got hits from Cook and Marrale as the Phoenix took advantage of a few Bison miscues to push the lead to 7-2. Two more runs would come across for the Phoenix in the fifth inning as Curry hit his second sacrifice fly of the game and junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly of his own. Mercer would add another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh as the Phoenix closed out the opener 10-2. 

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Cook paced the Phoenix with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Marrale added two hits and and RBI, while Curry, Mercer, and Rosario drove in 2 runs each. Senior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., ) notched his first win of the season, going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs while striking out 8.  

How It Happened Game 2: Curry got things going on the top of the first with a leadoff double and he would later score on a sacrifice fly by Mercer. Freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS) started the second inning with a single to center and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt by the Bison pitcher. Later in the inning, after a double by Procopio, Curry hit a 2-RBI single to right to make it 3-0 Phoenix. After a quiet third inning, the Phoenix blew the game open with a four run fourth despite only having one hit in the inning. Bases loaded walks to Cook and sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ), coupled with a sacrifice fly by Mercer and an RBI on a fielder's choice by freshman Ryan Torres (Baltimore, MD, Archbishop Curley HS) accounted for a four runs and resulted in a 7-0 lead. A triple by Curry highlighted a four hit and five run inning for the Phoenix in the sixth as they pushed their lead to 12-0. The Bison got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, but the Phoenix closed out the game with a 12-3 win.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Curry led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included a double, triple, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Daniels went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his collegiate debut. Procopio tallied 2 hits and 2RBI. Freshman Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) got the win in his collegiate debut giving up just two hits and striking out 5.

Up Next: The Phoenix will be on the road next Sunday with a doubleheader at Mary Baldwin University.
