Phoenix Fend Off Fighting Squirrels

STAUNTON, Va. - The Wilson College baseball team hit the road this afternoon for a nonconference doubleheader against the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University. The Phoenix (4-0, 0-0 CSAC) swept the Fighting Squirrels (2-5, 0-0 USAS) by scores of, 15-3 in the first game and 12-3 in the second game.

Game One: After Wilson was retired in order to start the first inning, Mary Baldwin got things going in the first with an RBI single that put them out in front, 1-0. But, senior Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) managed to work his out of a jam, leaving three runners stranded on base, limiting the damage. After Nolet struck out two in the bottom of the second, the Phoenix got the bats going in the top of the third; scoring four runs on three hits as senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) drove in the first run on a single to center field. One batter later, junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) knocked in another on a groundout, while two more runs scored after that on two passed balls, bringing the score to 4-1 after the top of the third. Picking it up in the top of the fifth inning, Wilson stuck again, this time adding 11 runs on seven hits and two errors, as the Phoenix walked away with a 15-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson scored 15 runs on 12 hits with five errors while holding their opponent to just three runs on six hits with three errors. Nolet picks up his second win of the season on his way to striking out seven batters. Senior Max Little (Crestview, FL., Spangdahlem) and freshman Ben Metz (Denver, PA, Garden Spot HS) both threw for one inning each in the victory, with Metz striking out two. Senior Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) capped off his game going 2-3 with a double and two runs, while sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS) went 2-3 with two walks, two runs, a double, and an RBI. Curry drove in two RBIs while going 2-4 with two runs scored.

Game Two: In the second game of today's doubleheader, the Phoenix started the top of the first out with a hit but could not come up with a run. In the bottom half of the inning, freshman Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) got the start for Wilson, striking out three batters, leaving the bases loaded for the Fighting Squirrels. Later on, in the top of the third, the Wilson offense got the bats going. Junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) got the scoring started with an RBI double that scored one. One batter later, Marrale scored on a Mary Baldwin throwing error on a double steal, bringing the score to 2-0. In the bottom of the third, Baumann continued dealing, striking out three batters; but Wilson gave up a run on a throwing error, bringing the score to 2-1 after three innings played. Then, in the top of the fourth inning, the Phoenix added six runs on seven hits, including an RBI double from Mercer and RBI singles for Marrale, Andre, senior Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill), and freshman Doc Daniels (Deal Island, MD, Crisfield HS). Skipping to the sixth inning, sophomore Bryan DeCarlo (Gaithersburg, MD, Hagerstown CC (MD)) belted a three-run homer as Wilson extended their lead to 12-1.
