Phoenix Topped in CSAC Semi-Final

Box Score Morristown, NJ - The Wilson College men's volleyball team was in action this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championships semi-final match versus top seeded Cairn University. The Highlanders (10-1) defeated the Phoenix (1-9) by a final score of 3-1 with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, and 25-5.

How It Happened: The Highlanders opened up the first set with a 5-1 run. A kill by sophomore Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA., Mills E. Godwin) with an assist from junior Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian) accounted for the first Phoenix point. The Phoenix would rattle off four straight to tie the match at 5-5. Later in the set, the Highlanders rattled off seven straight points to take a commanding lead, but the Phoenix fought back to pull within three points at 24-21, however the Highlanders closed out the set 25-21. The second set was one of the best for the Phoenix this season as the set opened with a kill by senior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary). After the teams exchanged several points, the Phoenix rattled off four straight kills by Hetzer, freshman Saria Alshaikhali (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Hayfield High School), junior Shae Cardenas (Torrance, CA.), and Carter-Johnson for a 10-6 lead. A five point Highlander run late in the set pulled the top-seed within striking distance, but a block by Perry closed out the set with a 25-19 Phoenix win. Set three saw the teams knotted at 5 points each in the early going and eventually, the Phoenix pulled ahead 10-9. Later in the set, after the Highlanders had taken the lead, the Phoenix pulled within three points at 24-21, but the Highlanders closed out the set 25-21. The fourth and final set was all Highlanders as they would jump out to a 13-1 advantage and never look back in route to the 25-5 set win and 3-1 match win.

Inside the Box Score: For the match, the Phoenix had 27 kills against 30 errors on 155 attempts for a -.026 attacking percentage, while the Highlanders posted a .084 attacking percentage with 37 kills against 27 errors on 119 attempts. Perry had a match high 12 kills and added 8 assists and 9 digs. Sophomore Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA, Notre Dame) had a team high 12 digs while Hetzer added 10 assists and 7 digs.
