Volleyball Swept in Season Debut

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball program made its intercollegiate debut this evening in a tri-match versus Lancaster Bible College and Eastern Mennonite University. Despite a solid effort the Phoenix were swept by the Chargers 3-0 and by the Royals 3-0.

The Phoenix (0-2) fell to the Chargers (2-3) by scores of 20-25, 19-25, 17-25 and to the Royals (5-5) by scores of 10-25, 12-25, and 18-25.

The Phoenix opened the game earning the first point in program history on an attack error by the Chargers to take a 1-0 advantage in the first set. Later in the set, freshman
Asim Riaz (Allentown, Pa. ) recorded the first kill to bring the Phoenix within a point at 4-3. The Chargers used a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 14-9 lead, but the Phoenix responded with a kill by freshman Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) and he followed that up with an ace to bring the team within 3 points at 14-11. The Phoenix would never get any closer than points the rest of the way and the Chargers finished off the first set scoring the final 3 points for the 25-20 win. 

During the second set, the Chargers used a 4-1 run to open the scoring. A kill by freshman
Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) brought the Phoenix within 4-2. After trading the next few points, the Phoenix used a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 8-7. After a pair of Charger points, another 3-0 run, highlighted by an ace from junior Jessie Thrush  (Chambersburg, Pa. , Cumberland Valley Christian ), tied the game at 10-10. The hosts would score 9 of the next 11 points en route to the 25-19 win in set 2.

The Phoenix took an early 4-3 lead in the third set, but the Chargers would rattle off 9 of the next 10 points to take a commanding 11-5 lead. The Phoenix made a run late in the set scoring 4 straight points  on back to back kills by freshmen
Michael Martin (Martinsburg, W.Va., Musselman ) and Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa, Dallastown Area H.S.) and a pair of aces off the hand of Quarry to pull within 22-16, but the Chargers would go on for the 25-17 win in set 3 and claim the match 3-0.

For the match, the Phoenix had 16 kills against 22 errors on 76 attempts for a -.079 hitting percentage. The Phoenix recorded 4 aces in the match. Aaron Hoke led the team with 8 kills.


During the second match versus Eastern Mennonite struggled in the first two sets against the Royals, who were competing in their 10th match of the season. But during a solid third set, the Phoenix grabbed an early 3-1 lead highlighted by an ace from Zerr and a kill by Martin. The two teams would battle back and forth for the next few points until the Royals scored 6 out of 7 points to take a 19-11 edge. The Phoenix wouldn't quit as the team would later score 5 of 7 points capped off by a kill from Aaron Hoke to get within 24-18, but the Royals were able to finish off the set and complete the 3-0 victory.

For the match the Phoenix tallied 12 kills against 28 errors on 70 attempts for a -.229 hitting percentage. Aaron Hoke led the team with 9 kills and freshman
Jeremy Waldman (New Oxford, Pa., New Oxford) added 10 assists. Freshman Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the team with 7 digs.

Wilson will be back on the court to open conference play on Saturday at PSU Altoona. The Phoenix willplay PSU Altoona at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match with Lancaster Bible College at 3:00 p.m.
