Softball Dozens Up Gallaudet In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Wilson rolled to a pair of mercy-ruled shortened games over hosting Gallaudet in the nation's capital on a calm, sunny Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix racked up a dozen in both contests to finish off the Bison in six innings in the opener and five innings in Game 2.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 12, Gallaudet 2 (6 Innings)
Game 2 – Wilson 12, Gallaudet 3 (5 Innings)

Venue: GU Softball Complex

Records: Wilson 14-7, 3-1 UE; Gallaudet 3-21, 0-6 UE

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Wilson went scoreless in the opening frame, and that was about the only bad thing that happened to the Blue and White on the day as they scored every inning in both games thereafter. Sydney Hartle (FY, Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) started the scoring by reaching on a double to left center then scoring on a dropped fly in the outfield. One inning later Madison Briggs (Jr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) added to the lead with a base hit to right to score Katleyn Keller (FY, Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) and Payton Kendall (Sr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road).
  • The flood gates opened in the fourth as the Phoenix posted another four runs on five hits. Keller drove in Caitlin Oliviero (So., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) who led off the frame with a bunt single. Kayla Talbert (So., Hagerstown, Pa. / North Hagerstown, Pa. / Saint Peter's) then drove in Jenna Weaver (FY, Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) on an infield single before Briggs added her third RBI of the day with a base hit to right to score Kendall again. Hartle capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring in Talbert.
  • Gallaudet was able to avoid the shutout with a squeeze play in the bottom of the fourth, but Wilson was able to get that run back as Keller drove in Oliviero in the fifth. The Bison scored again to make it 8-2 later in the frame.
  • Wilson added another four-spot in the sixth to set up the final score. Kiera O'Brine (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) scored on a passed ball to start the rally. Hartle and Abigail Evans (So., Muncy, Pa. / Warrior Run) scored shortly after an infield throwing error. Oliviero made it 12-2 after another Gallaudet miscue in the outfield.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Wilson didn't slow down any and was quick to start the scoring as Talbert hit in Kendall in the first. Kendall added to the lead with a two-RBI base hit to score O'Brine and Elena Worthington (So., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) one inning later.
  • Talbert sparked a rally by leading off the third with a triple and was brought in by Hartle two batters later. Hartle and Worthington made it 6-0 after consecutive wild pitches. Oliviero then laid down a bunt single to score O'Brine.
  • Keller and Talbert added to the lead in the fourth with a double steal and a wild pitch. Briggs eventually put Wilson in double digits after she scored on a base hit by O'Brine later in the frame.
  • Gallaudet was able to circle the base baths three times with a run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to stay within eight as Keller and Talbert scored again in the fifth.
Inside The Numbers
  • Worthington started the opener and picked up the win to improve to 4-1. She allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three in 4.0 innings of work. Morgan McMaster (FY, Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) started Game 2 and also went 4.0 innings to obtain her first victory of the season. She allowed one run on two hits while striking out three.
  • Talbert increased her reached base streak to 15 games and moved her scoring streak to five games. She scored four times on the day with three runs in the nightcap after a triple and a pair of walks.
  • Oliviero had an incredible day at the plate as she went a combined 4-for-7. She scored three times, all in Game 1, and added an RBI in both games.
  • Kendall, Keller, Briggs, O'Brine, and Weaver all had multiple-hit games. Briggs and Kendall had multiple-hit games in both contests.
