Baseball Falls in CSAC Championship Game

LA PLUME, Pa.- The Wilson College baseball team saw their historic season come to a close this afternoon with a 9-4 loss in the CSAC championship game.

How It Happened: After splitting the first two games of the best-of-three series, the Phoenix (31-11) and Giants (24-18) played the rubber game to see which team would claim the CSAC crown and advance to the NCAA DIII Championships. The Phoenix jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning as an RBI single by senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) brought home sophomore Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, ) and junior Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, ). The defending champs wasted no time in responding as a pair of extra base hits combined with 2 balks and 2 wild pitches put the Giants on top 3-2 after one inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, a two out rally proved to be the back-breaking moments of the game for the Phoenix. A walk and a single followed by a 3-run blast gave the Giants a commanding 6-2 advantage. The dangerous and experienced offense of the Phoenix would battle back in the top of the 4th. With two outs, senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) singled and stole second base. Marrale stepped to the plate and delivered a monster homerun to right center to make it a 6-4 game. The Phoenix would go on to load up the bases, but the Giants were able to induce a fly out to get out of the jam. Again in the 5th inning, the Phoenix loaded the bases with two outs, and again the Giants were able to get out of trouble, this time with a strikeout. Neither team threatened again until the bottom of the 8th when the Giants tallied 3 runs on 3 hits to push their lead to 9-4. A double by junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) was all the offense the Phoenix could muster in the 9th as the Giants closed out the game and clinched the CSAC title.

Inside the Box Score: Buchanan and Mercer combined for 4 of the 8 hits by the Phoenix. Pitchers for the Phoenix combined to allow 9 earned runs on 12 hits while striking out 4 and walking 5 batters. The Phoenix stranded 13 runners on base for the game. The 31 wins by the Phoenix are the most in program history.
