LANGHORNE, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team traveled to face Cairn University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) double head this afternoon. The Phoenix (15-6, 4-2 CSAC) split with the Highlanders (10-9, 4-2 CSAC) with after losing the first game with a score of 5-4 and winning the second game with a final score of 10-1.
Game One: Wilson started the game with senior
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) on the mound and a solid defensive effort to keep Cairn off the scoreboard. The Phoenix found the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning with fifth year
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) advancing off a single to reach home after a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, Fairmont State Univ.). Shortly after junior
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) hit a double to left field allowing fellow junior
Michael Mcgee (Frederick, MD., Thomas Johnson) to cross the plate to close out the third inning with a score of 2-0. Wilson would hold a 2-1 lead until the top of the seventh where senior
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) was able to extend the Phoenix lead to 3-1 after hitting a double to left field and stealing home on a wild pitch from Cairn. In the top of the eighth, Wilson again extended their lead with Hoff crossing home and would hold a 4-2 lead until the bottom of the ninth inning. Cairn found two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to have a come from behind win with a final score of 5-4.
Inside the Box Score: Cook led the Phoenix offense with one run, two hits, and one RBI.
Nolet pitched for six innings finishing with 14 strikeouts while allowing three hits and two runs against 26 batters. Wilson finished the first game with four runs, five hits, and four errors while Cairn finished with five runs, four hits, and four errors.
Game Two: The Phoenix started game two in a similar to fashion to the first, finding the first three runs of the game in the top of the second inning. Junior
Dean Mercer, sophomore
Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS), and senior
Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) all crossed home in the second inning to give the Phoenix an early 3-0 lead. At the top of the fifth inning, Mercer hit a homerun bringing the score to 6-0 after bringing Cook and Hoff home as well. The scoring continued for the Phoenix in the top of the sixth inning with Curry and Hoff scoring to bring the score to 8-0. In the top of the eighth, Wilson found two more runs off Curry and Cook to bring the game to a close with a final score of 10-1.
Inside the Box Score: Hoff, Cook, Curry, and Mercer all found two runs for the Phoenix while Andre and Finn each had one run. Freshman
Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) earned his seventh win of the season after pitching five innings with six strikeouts against 20 batters. Wilson finished the second game with 10 runs,13 hits, and zero errors while Cairn finished with one run, seven hits, and one error.
Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to face Wilkes University in a nonconference double header on Tuesday, April 5th at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
