CHAMBERSBURG, Pa- The Wilson College baseball team took on the visiting Beavers of The City College of New York (CCNY) in a non-conference doubleheader. The Phoenix (7-0, 0-0 CSAC) swept the Beavers (1-4, 0-0 CUNY) with final scores of 10-2 in the first game and 7-0 in the second.
Game One: Wilson took the lead in the bottom of the first inning going up 2-0 thanks to some heads-up baserunning from the Phoenix and a few errors from the Beavers' defense. Fifth-year senior
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) and junior
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) both crossed the plate after advancing on wild pitches and stolen bases. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Phoenix offense continued to capitalize on errors, earning four more runs off five errors from the Beavers, putting the score at 7-1. The Wilson defense stayed strong in the top of the fifth inning, quickly recovering after letting up a home run, closing the inning by retiring the next three batters. The Phoenix bats continued to wrack up runs, scoring another three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score to 10-2. Wilson made quick work defensively and saw just seven batters in the next two innings, going on to finish the game by a final score of 10-2.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson earned ten runs on seven hits with six RBIs.
Curry went 3-3 with one RBI, one walk, and one stolen base. Senior
Eli Klopp (College Park, MD., DeMatha Catholic) added two RBIs while finishing going 0-2 with one walk, while junior
Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) also added two RBIs while getting beamed twice. Senior
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) earned the win after pitching six innings with nine strikeouts and only giving up two runs.
Game Two: The second game started slow for both teams, with Wilson earning their first run in the second inning. Freshman
Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS) hit a line drive down the left-field line, earning an RBI, while the Phoenix added one more run, off a wild pitch. Senior
Juan Rosario (Hollywood, FL., Hollywood Hills) sparked the team's next runs after hitting an RBI double in the bottom of the third. Later on in the inning, a
Seidleck single added one more run for Wilson, bringing the score to 4-0 after three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore
Haden Hoff (Westminster, MD, Fairmont State Univ.) launched a solo homer to left-centerfield, pushing the score to 5-0. Then, in the bottom of the fifth senior
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) hit base knock to the shortstop that drove in a run.
Cook later reached home on a wild pitch as the Phoenix walked away with a 7-0 win in game two.
Inside the Box Score: The Wilson pitching stepped up in game two, only allowing three hits in the game while the bullpen combined for 13 punchouts. Freshman
Chris Baumann (Snow Hill, MD, Snow Hill HS) earned his third win of the season, only allowing two hits while striking out nine in five innings of work.
Hoff went 2-3 including a solo shot and a double, while junior
Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) went 2-3 with a double and a walk.
Rosario added two doubles, finishing the game hitting 2-3 with one RBI. Altogether, the Phoenix added seven runs on 11 hits with no errors.
Up Next: Wilson College will hit the road to New Jersey to face Rutgers University-Camden (2-3, 0-0 NJAC) for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
