Mounties Take Two From Baseball

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team hosted Mount Aloysius this afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. The Mounties (11-5) took both games from the Phoenix (14-5) by a score of 5-4 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap.

How it Happened Game 1: The Mounties scored a single run in the top of the second inning, a pair of runs in the third, and another single run in the fourth to hold a 4-0 advantage after four innings. Offense for the Phoenix was tough to come by as only one runner reached scoring position through the first four innings. That changed in the bottom of the fifth as the Phoenix began to climb back into the game. Senior Gerald Buchanan (Olney, MD, ) got things going with a double to right field. Sophomore Brady Andre (Brookeville, MD, Sherwood HS) would follow with a single that advanced Buchanan to third and he came home to score on an overthrow by the center fielder for the first Phoenix run of the game. In the top of the sixth, the Mounties took advantage of three Phoenix miscues to plate another run for a 5-1 lead. A rally by the Phoenix in the bottom half would tighten the score. Senior KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., ) led things off with a single through the right side. A sacrifice bunt by senior Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., ) moved Curry into scoring position. Junior Dean Mercer (Dunedin, FL., Clearwater Central Catholic) followed with a blast over the left field fence to make the score 5-3. Buchanan followed with a single and he later scored on an RBI single by Andre to make it 5-4. The Phoenix threatened in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore pinch runner Bryan DeCarlo (Gaithersburg, MD, ) stole second and third base, but was cut down trying to score on a fielder's choice to end the threat as the Phoenix fell 5-4 in the opener.

Inside the Box Score: Buchanan and Andre paced the offense with 2 hits each. Buchanan scored 2 runs and Andre tallied 2 RBI. Mercer cranked his 2nd homerun of the season. Senior Dereck Ivey (Fairfield, PA., Fairfield) suffered the loss after allowing 1 run in 2 innings of work.

How It Happened Game 2: The Phoenix jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first as Curry led off with a single to right field. Cook and Buchanan followed with back-to-back singles, the latter drove in Curry for a 1-0 advantage. In the bottom of the second, the Phoenix threatened with runners on second and third, but couldn't push a run across. The Mounties pushed a run across in the third with a two out walk, hit by pitch, and a single to tie things at 1-1. A three-run fifth inning for the Mounties put the visitors on top 4-1. The Phoenix got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Alex Seidleck (Crownsville, MD, Indian Creek HS) got things started with a single to left field. Later in the inning Seidleck scored on an RBI single by junior Michael Mcgee (Frederick, MD., Thomas Johnson) to make it 4-2. Cook led off the bottom of the seventh with his second homerun of the season to pull the Phoenix within 4-3. Mercer followed with a single and advanced to second but would be stranded there as the Mounties got the final two outs to claim the 4-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: The Phoenix out hit the Mounties 12-6 with Curry, Cook, Mercer, Buchanan, and Seidleck each recording two hits. Freshman Adrian Lugo (San Juan, Puerto Rico, Manuel Cruz Maceira HS) took the loss after allowing 3 runs in two innings of work.
