CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's soccer team kicked off earlier this afternoon against the Patriots of the University of Valley Forge. The Phoenix earned their first win of the season today after beating the Patriots with a final score of 4-1. Prior to this afternoon's game, Wilson honored their six seniors,
Noah Wickenheiser (Cresco, PA., Notre Dame), Nicholas Mattson (Pennsburg, PA., Upper Perkiomen), Terrell Samuels (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg), Victor Ortiz (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Ana G. Mendez University System), Ryder Wallace (Jim Thorpe, PA., Jim Thorpe) and Billy Merk (Macungie, PA, Lehigh Carbon Community College).
How It Happened: Wilson was able to have the first two shots of the game off the foot of
Ryder Wallace before the Patriots managed their own shot that was saved by
Billy Merk. Valley Forge scored the first goal of the game and their only goal of the game in the 13th minute. Shortly after, the Phoenix were awarded a penalty kick which was saved by the Valley Forge keeper. In the 20th minute, Wilson was awarded another penalty kick.
Connor Bowers (Hagerstown, MD, North Hagerstown High School) stepped to the spot and was able to convert for his first goal of the season and tying the game at one apiece. Eight minutes later,
Ryder Wallace had another shot deflected by the Patriots keeper which was finished by fellow teammate
Brian Mulholland (Oracle, AZ, Canyon del Oro High School) giving the Phoenix a 2-1 lead. Five minutes into the start of the second half,
Martin Souza (Manassas Park, VA, Manassas Park High School) extended the Wilson lead to 3-1 after an assist from
Brian Mulholland. In the 65th minute,
Dylan Youmans (Westminster, MD, South Carroll High School) scored the fourth goal for the Phoenix after getting on the end of a long pass and beating the Valley Forge keeper.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson outshot Valley Forge 22-12 over the course of 90 minutes. The goalkeeping of
Billy Merk and Vincent Natale (Mt. Airy, Maryland, Linganore High School) combined for four saves. Both
Dylan Youmans and Connor Bowers earned their first goals of the season, while
Brian Mulholland and Martin Souza netted their second goals this season.
