CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted Cairn University in non-conference action this evening at Kris's Meadow. The Phoenix defeated the Highlanders 4-3 in a tightly contested match.

Cairn (0-2-1) scored the first goal of the game when Zack Nelson collected a rebound off of freshman goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) and slipped it into the back of the net putting the visitors ahead 1-0 just three and half minutes into the game. Wilson (1-1-0 ) responded at the 14:35 mark, when freshman Shane Ray (Sharptown, Md., Mardela) took a pass from sophomore Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood ) and scored his first goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1. Midway through the first period, freshman Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) made a run up the right side and freshman Javier Gonzalez-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain, Colegio Fray Luis de Leon) set him up with a perfect pass as Azim ripped a shot past the Highlander goalie, pushing the Phoenix lead to 2-1. The hosts would increase the lead to 3-1 when sophomore Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) took a cross off the foot of Azim and slipped one to the back right post from inside the box at the 39:17 mark of the opening half.

The Highlanders would storm back in the second half and get on the board early with a header from Brendan Keller to cut the Highlander deficit to 3-2. A misque by the Phoenix would lead to an own goal at the 61:23 mark and tie the game at 3-3. With just over ten minutes remaining, the Phoenix would take a corner kick and a Highlander defender would be called for a hand-ball setting up a penalty kick. Azim would step up and rip the kick into the back of the net to give the Phoenix a 4-3 edge late in the match. The defense would hold strong over the final minutes of the game as the Phoenix would go on for the 4-3 victory.

Perry faced 10 shots in goal and collected 7 saves. The Phoenix made half of their shots on goal, scoring on four of eight attempts.

Wilson will travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to take on Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference opener at 2:00 p.m.
