Cotton'e Goal Scores Point For Phoenix vs. Notre Dame

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Wilson picked up a crucial point as it tied Notre Dame in United East action on a grey Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix conceded a goal just 2:11 into the game, but were able to equalize midway through the first half.

The Phoenix came into the day tied with Penn State Brandywine for the last playoff spot in the conference tournament, but with the Lions' loss to Penn, Wilson now is tied with Valley Forge for the final two spots in the tournament with one game to play.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Notre Dame 1

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 3-9-4, 1-4-2 (5 points) UE; Notre Dame 3-6-4, 3-2-2 (11 points) UE

How It Happened
  • The Gators made their presence known early as they struck first in the third minute. Tassilo Lehmkuhl set up the play with a shot that featured a trademark acrobatic save by Logan Neves (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge), but the ricochet bounced back out to Athanasios Ziliaskopoulos who had an open net to put it away.
  • Wilson was quick in their actions to pull even. Landon Howe (Jr., Martinsburg, W.Va. / St. Maria Goretti) put a shot on target just two minutes later and Jace Williams (Jr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) had an attempt that was saved in the 13th. The third time ended up being the charm, however, as Tyler Cottone (Jr., Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley) hit the target in the 25th on a set piece. Andrew Bailey (Jr., Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) initiated the play on a throw in and found Omar Cortez (So., Columbia, Tenn. / Spring Hill) in front of the near post. Cortez was able to head it to the opposite side there Cottone hammered it home.
  • With Neves holding the line on the opposite side with more Gumby-esque saves, the Blue and White had some prime Grade A opportunities to go ahead of the Gators. One of them came in the 60th minute as Williams put a header on target inside the left post with Gabriel Gendarme making the save. Another followed 12 minutes later as Emmanuel Colon Gonzalez (Jr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico / Santa Maria) had an excellent look with Gendarme out of position, but the Gators' defense was able to make a team save. Colon Gonzalez had another prime chance in the 84th with the attempt joint just over the right 90.
Inside The Numbers
  • Cottone's goal was the first of his career and his only shot of the game.
  • Bailey's helper gave him his third point in the last three games. The two others came on a goal in the win against Brandywine.
  • Cortez's assist was his second in three games after he tallied one also against Brandywine.
  • Neves made five stops on the day to put him over 50 for the season.
  • Wilson was outshot 16-8 overall, but shots on goal were even at six each. Saves (5), corners (3), and fouls (13-12) were nearly even as well.
