Phoenix Upended In United East First Round At Cairn

(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – Tuesday's meeting between No. 10 Wilson and No. 7 Cairn in the United East Championship first round was closer than their first meeting three weeks ago. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, they still found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard as the Highlanders snapped their four-game unbeaten streak while also ending their season.

The Basics

Score: No. 10 Wilson 1, No. 7 Cairn 3

Venue: Stillman Athletic Complex

Records: Wilson 3-10-5, Cairn 5-9-3

How It Happened
  • Alijah Miller gave the hosts a fast start with a goal 10:55 into the contest on an assist from Nathan Babyak on a throw-in. It was a sign of things to come as he eventually made it 2-0 with a helper from Brock Burres in the 35th minute.
  • That score held through halftime, but Wilson was able to strike back with a goal early in the second half. Following a foul, Lenin Cinco (XXX) was able to cut into the deficit after he headed in a loose ball in front of the net to the car corner to make it 2-1.
  • Miller wasn't finished for the Highlanders as he completed a hat trick in the 76th minute. The Phoenix didn't give up and threatened multiple times the rest of the way. They had a string of three corner kicks in the 78th and 80th minutes, but were only able to generate one shot which came from Jordan DeVincent (Jr., Chantilly, Va. / Westfield) who sent it wide right.
  • Wilson averted further danger as Cairn was awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Logan Neves (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge) guessed correctly and stuffed James Papanikolau to keep the score 3-1. A late push by the Blue and White saw Andrew Bailey (Jr., Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore) take a couple swings that were off target. Another by Jace Williams (Jr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) found its way, but was saved by the Highlanders' Xander Jakeway.
Inside The Numbers
  • Cinco's score was his second goal and sixth point of the season.
  • Neves finished the day with four saves.
