Phoenix Blanked at York College Tournament

YORK, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team traveled to York College this weekend for a non-conference tournament. The Phoenix battled Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham, Marietta College, SUNY Canton, and host York College.

In the opening match versus Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (8-5), the Phoenix (0-10) were defeated 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-10, and 25-15. Freshman Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) led the Phoenix in the match with 12 digs, and a pair of kills and service aces. Freshman Simahj James (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Northeast High) led the team with 6 assists. For the match the Phoenix had 6 kills against 25 errors on 52 attempts for a -.365 attacking percentage.

The second match of the day featured a contest against Marietta College. The Pioneers (13-6) topped the Phoenix 3-0 by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-8. 

On day 2, the Phoenix faced off against another pair of tough opponents. The first match of the day was versus SUNY Canton (8-8) and the Roos won 3-0 by scores of 25-3, 25-3, and 25-19. Sophomore Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) paced the Phoenix with 12 digs and 2 service aces. James added 5 assists in the loss. For the match the Phoenix had 11 kills against 25 errors on 76 attempts for an attacking percentage of -.184.

The Phoenix concluded the tournament with a matchup against host York College (16-2). The Spartans won 3-0 by scores of 25-10, 25-11, and 25-20. The Phoenix were led by James with 8 digs, 8 assists, and a game high 5 blocks. For the match the Phoenix posted 13 kills against 16 errors on 69 attempts for a -.043 attacking percentage.

Wilson returns to action on Thursday, September 29 at home versus Hood College at 7:00 p.m.
