Phoenix Slowed By Mounties

Box Score

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted non-conference foe Mount Aloysius College this afternoon. The Mounties defeated the Phoenix by a score of 4-1.

In a match that featured a fast and furious opening half, that saw the Mounties (5-2-1) and Phoenix (2-4-1) combine for thirteen shots, it was the visitors who got on the board first. Just before the thirty minute mark off the half, the Mounties Jim Smith took a free kick and snuck it past the Phoenix wall and put it in past the right post for a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, the Mounties Alex Duthie gathered a rebound off of a save by sophomore goalkeeper Michael Martin (Martinsburg, W.Va., Musselman ) and stuck it in the back of the net on the left side. The Phoenix would respond right before the half as freshman Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) scored, bringing the hosts within 2-1 heading into the break.

During the second half, the Mounties took advantage of a Phoenix foul early in the early going and Smith knocked in his second goal of the match via a penalty kick, pushing the lead to 3-1. The Mounties added another goal in the sixtieth minute as Kevin Ouellette took an assist from Kyle Marshall right in front and found the back of the net for a 4-1 advantage. As the Phoenix continued to battle, the offense just couldn't break through against a tough Mountie defense as the visitors would take the victory by a final score of 4-1.

For the match the Mounties out shot the Phoenix 15-7 and enjoyed a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Azim scored for the fifth time in his last six games and leads the team with 14 points on the season.

Wilson will host Penn College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
