Phoenix Burn Lions in Men's Soccer

Box Score

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team got back into the win column with a 2-1 victory over Bryn Athyn in a North Eastern Athletic Conference clash.

The Phoenix (2-3-1, 1-1-1) jumped on top of the Lions (2-5, 2-3) midway through the first half when junior
Effren Amezquita (Xela, Guatemala, Chambersburg) ripped a shot between the posts giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. During the remaining time in the opening half, the Phoenix defense would survive three corner kicks and a pair of shots from the Lions offense while also firing two shots of their own, but neither team would score as the Phoenix would take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Senior
Jacob Benford (Rockwood, Pa. , Rockwood Area Sr. ) found the back of the net less than four minutes into the second half pushing the Phoenix lead to 2-0. Over the next several minutes the two teams would challenge each other on both sides of the field, taking several shots and being called for several fouls, including three yellow cards. The Lions would score a goal at the 83:55 mark when Damilare Adeleye found the back of the net making the score 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix. A late rally by the Lions saw a corner kick and header shot sail wide and then with less than a minute remaining freshman goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) collected a save on the Lions last shot to preserve the 2-1 Phoenix victory.

For the match, the Lions out shot the Phoenix 15-13, with only 3 shots on goal, and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Wilson returns to action on Wednesday at home versus Mount Aloysius at 4:00 p.m.
