Phoenix Swept in Conference Openers

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a pair of matches versus SUNY Cobleskill and Morrisville State. The Phoenix were defeated by the Tigers 3-0 and by the Mustangs 3-0.

After a lengthy delay due to power outages in Cobleskill, the Phoenix (0-4, 0-2) opened the evening with Tigers (5-3, 1-1) and fell by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-22. Freshman Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) led the Phoenix with 7 kills and six assists in the match, while fellow freshman Kaydi Brubaker (Williamsburg, Pa., Williamsburg) led the team with five service aces. Sophomore Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) tallied a match high 10 assists for the Phoenix.

For the match, the Phoenix had 9 kills against 22 errors on 71 attempts for an attacking percentage of .-183, while the Tigers had 27 kills against 14 errors on 74 attempts for a .176 attacking percentage.

The second match of the evening against the Mustangs (7-5, 1-1) saw the Phoenix fall by scores of 26-16, 25-5, and 25-10. Freshman Simahj James (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Northeast High) recorded a game high 4 blocks, while Baptiste led the Phoenix in kills (3), assists (2), and Digs (10). Freshman Erin Claycomb (Queen, Pa., Claysburg-Kimmel) led the Phoenix with 3 services aces.

For the match the Phoenix had 5 kills against 20 errors on 54 attempts for a -.278 attacking percentage, while the Mustangs totaled 22 kills against 9 errors on 38 attempts for a .342 attacking percentage.

Wilson returns to action tomorrow in Cobleskill with an adjusted schedule that features the Phoenix versus SUNY Poly at 11:00 a.m. and Gallaudet University at 1:00 p.m.
