Women's Volleyball Bounced at Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team hit the road for the first time this year, traveling to Hollins University for a non-conference matchup. Hollins defeated the Phoenix by a score of 3-0.

The Phoenix (0-2) were defeated by Hollins (2-6) by scores of 25-9, 25-6, and 25-9. In the opening set the Phoenix grabbed an early 3-2 lead on the strength of a service ace by freshman Erin Claycomb (Queen, Pa., Claysburg-Kimmel) and a kill by sophomore Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown). Hollins would rattle off 8 of the next 9 points to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Hollins would continue to make big scoring runs and took the first set 25-9.

The hosts would take control of the second set right away and run out to a 22-3 lead before eventually taking the set 25-6. The Phoenix continued to battle in the third set after getting down 11-4, a kill by freshman Simahj James (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Northeast High) and an ace by Quarry pulled the team within 11-6, but Hollins would score 9 of the next 10 points en route to the 25-9 win in set three and the 3-0 victory for the match.

For the match the Phoenix had 15 kills against 20 errors on 61 attempts for a -.082 attacking percentage, while Hollins had 35 kills against just 2 errors for a strong .647 attacking percentage.

Freshman Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) led the Phoenix with 6 kills, while Claycomb tallied 12 assists and sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) and Quarry each had 3 digs.

Wilson will travel to SUNY Cobleskill for their conference openers this weekend. The Phoenix open with SUNY Cobleskill and Morrisville State on Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
