Late Goal Sinks Phoenix

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team traveled to Delaware Valley University for a non-conference match this evening. A late goal in the second half gave the host Aggies a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix.

On a cool evening under the lights, Wilson (1-2-1) had some scoring opportunities against the Delaware Valley (3-2) defense but weren't able to convert enough of those opportunities into goals to win the game. The opening half saw the Phoenix get off nine shots, but attempts by sophomore's Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood ) and Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point) and one by freshman Javier Gonzalez-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain, Colegio Fray Luis de Leon) were all stopped by the Aggies goalkeeper. Not to be outdone in the half, Phoenix freshman goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) turned away the two shots he faced as the teams headed to the break in a scoreless tie.

Action picked up early in the second half as the Aggies jumped on the board first when Max Drummond deflected a cross from a teammate into the net giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage just over six minutes into the half. The Phoenix netted the equalizer midway through the half when freshman Shane Ray (Sharptown, Md., Mardela) found classmate Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) for a break away and Azim ripped the shot past the Aggie goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams would trade scoring opportunities over the next several minutes until the Aggies Nick Miller shed a defender and used a high bounce off the turf to chip a shot over the outstretched hands of Perry and into the goal for the winner with just 2:28 remaining in the match.

For the match the Phoenix held a 16-10 shot advantage and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Azim scored a goal for the third straight match and he leads the team with 4 goals on the season.

Wilson will return to action on Saturday as the team returns to conference play at Penn State Abington at 3:00 p.m.
