Phoenix Battle Bison to a Draw

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilson College men's soccer team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play on the road at Gallaudet University this afternoon. Regulation and two overtimes weren't enough as the two teams had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

On a hot and humid afternoon on the turf at Hoy Field, the Bison (1-1-1, 0-0-1) got on the board early in the opening half with a goal by Brian Espanto just a little over seven minutes into the game. Less than five minutes later, the Bison again found the back of the net when Roel Gutierrez scored giving the hosts a 2-0 lead. The Phoenix (1-1-1, 0-0-1) got a goal from freshman Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) who found the bottom left corner of the goal to get the Phoenix within 2-1 at the 36:20 mark off the half. Neither team would score again and the Bison would hold a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Phoenix would tie the game up at 2-2 less than ten minutes into the second half when freshman Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) took a direct kick from thirty yards out and knocked it in the top right corner of the goal. The Bison reclaimed the lead in the sixty-sixth minute on another goal by Gutierrez. As the game went on, the heat and the tempers continued to rise as five yellow cards were assessed in the final thirty minutes of regulation. With less than two minutes to go in regulation, the Phoenix scored an outstanding goal when Azim crossed the ball to sophomore Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii), who headed it to sophomore Kevin Lysaght (Toms River, Pa. , Toms River North ), who then buried it in the back of the goal to tie the game at 3-3.

Each team got a shot off in the first overtime session with no score and the Phoenix had a couple of opportunities in the second overtime session, but weren't able to find the goal and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Phoenix dominated the game statistically, outshooting the Bison 31-11 and holding a 10-1 advantage in corners.

Wilson will be back in action on Monday night at Delaware Valley University at 7:00 p.m.
