Phoenix and Wolves Battle to a Draw

Box Score

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference match-up. Regulation and a pair of overtimes weren't enough to declare a winner as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

The Phoenix (4-5-2, 3-2-2 NEAC) and the Wolves (4-2-3, 2-1-3 NEAC) played a tough, physical contest which featured a combined 28 shots and 15 saves. The Wolves fired off nine first half shots, but freshman goalkeeper
Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) collected five saves in keeping the visitors off the board. The Phoenix had a great scoring  opportunity when freshman Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) took a penalty shot midway through the half, but the Wolves goalkeeper Willie Romero guessed right and carded the save. The teams headed to the break in a scoreless tie.

During the second half, the teams continued to trade shots but both defenses played solid and made great plays to keep the other off the board. The scoreless tie was broken in the seventy-third minute when the Wolves Rachid Blanken gathered a rebound in front and stuck it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix responded five minutes later after a foul by the Wolves led to a free kick. Sophomore
Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point) lined up just inside midfield on the right side and launched the ball to the left post where sophomore Bassil Andijani (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Jeelfaisal) slid low and knocked it in to tie the game at 1-1. Each team took one more shot in regulation but to no avail and the teams headed to overtime.

The Wolves controlled possession in the first overtime and had two good opportunities to score but Perry came up with a pair of great saves to force a second overtime. In the second overtime, the Wolves again had chances to score, but the Phoenix defense came up with some big plays and Perry tallied three more saves as the game would end with a 1-1 draw.

For the match the Wolves out shot the Phoenix 22-6 and had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Perry collected  12 saves in goal for the Phoenix.

Wilson will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Penn State Berks.
