Phoenix Clipped By Colonels

Box Score (WILKES-BARRE, Pa.) – Jacob McCoy (Sr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) and Jackson Wolfe (So., Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford) both hit double figures in kills, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Wilkes in non-conference action Wednesday evening. The Phoenix dropped a close opening set by two and forced a fourth after a narrow win in the third. However, the Colonels had the Phoenix's number with strong games in the second and fourth.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 1, Wilkes 3

Venue: Henry Gymnasium

Records: Wilson 7-5, Wilkes 10-9

How It Happened
  • Action was fairly even throughout the opening set with 13 ties and four lead changes. Wilson had some momentum after a 3-0 stretch to take an 18-15 lead, but Wilkes answered with the next three to tie the frame once again. McCoy knotted things back up late at 24-all before the Colonels took the next two points for a 1-0 lead.
  • Wilkes fed off the momentum and jumped out to a 15-6 lead. The Phoenix scored five of the next seven before Wilkes finished on an 8-4 stretch.
  • Another nailbiter followed in the third. This time Wilson was able to get the better end of the scoreboard. Demetrius Simmons (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) blocked a Wilkes attack in a 4-0 run to put Wilson up 21-19, and he added a kill after Wilkes tied it up on the next two points. McCoy finished the game with a kill to keep the Blue and White alive.
  • Wilson started off strong with a 7-4 start in the fourth with McCoy and Peter Marston (FY, Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) getting a block to take a 4-3 lead. Marston followed up with a solo rejection on the next point. Wilkes turned things around with a 9-2 run for a 14-10 lead shortly after, however, and Wilson was unable to recover.
Inside The Numbers
  • McCoy had an impressive night with 12 kills on 23 attempts for an attack percentage of .435.
  • Wolfe was right behind him with 11 and an attack percentage of .303. He added eight digs on the receiving end.
  • Scotty Zorn (FY, York, Pa. / Dallastown) and Camden Sterner (Jr., Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) paced the Phoenix with nine digs.
  • Satvik Sharma (So., Hummelstown, Pa. / Hershey) set up the attack with 26 assists. Marston added 10.
