Phoenix, Poss Record 100th Win

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson baseball team and head coach Johnny Poss reached a milestone as they recorded their 100th win together with a victory over Valley Forge on Friday. The win also gave the Phoenix a series sweep over the Patriots and increased their win streak to nine games.

Wilson first fielded a baseball team in 2019 and reached the milestone in just 138 games.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 13, Valley Forge 1

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 20-5, 8-1 CSAC; Valley Forge 10-13, 3-6 CSAC

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix got off to another hot start with three runs in the opening frame. Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion) brought in the first two on a single to left field that circled around Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island) and Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland). Marrale eventually scored two batters later on a double play.
  • Ryan Torres (So., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) extended the lead to 4-0 as he hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Jack Pachella (Fy., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) to score in the bottom of the second. Wilson then broke the game open with four runs in the third. Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) doubled to right center that brought in Alex Seidleck (So., Crownsville, Md. / Indian Creek) and Marrale. Pachella hit him in two batters later and a failed pickoff attempt allowed Brady Andre (Jr., Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood) to score for an 8-0 lead.
  • The score remained there until the sixth. Seidleck hit in Griebel on a base hit to right and Daniels added a sac fly that plated Michael McGee (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson). An error on the center fielder bringing the ball in allowed Seidleck to score for an 11-0 lead.
  • One inning later Griebel hit an infield single off the first baseman to score Jordan Daphney (So., Countryside, Fla. / Brunswick) and Vinny Hall (Fy., Fulton, Md. / St. Johns) scored on a wild pitch for a 13-0 lead.
  • Valley Forge avoided the shutout with a run in the ninth, but other than that the Phoenix battery was largely unscathed. It took a no-hitter into the fifth and struck out nine on the day. Shane Bowie (Jr., Frederick, Md. / Thomas Johnson) recorded the win to improve to 2-0 after coming on in relief and pitching the fifth and sixth innings. He struck out three of the nine while giving up just one hit. Emilio Rodriguez (Fy., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) started the game and went four innings of hitless baseball.
Inside The Numbers
  • The Phoenix pounded out 13 hits with nine different hitters combining for the baker's dozen. Ten different players scored runs. Seidleck led the way going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Daniels brought in the most runs with three while scoring one himself. He went 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Marrale hit in a pair and scored a pair on a 1-for-3 day. He has now reached base safely in the last eight games.
  • The three hits by Valley Forge are the fewest allowed by the Phoenix this season. The one run allowed matches the lowest by the Phoenix this season.
  • Head coach Johnny Poss' winning percentage of .725 puts him sixth among active Division III coaches and No. 17 among all-time Division III coaches.
