Buchanan's Home Run Helps Phoenix Down Marymount

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – A Gerald Buchanan (Gr., Olney, Md. / Montgomery CC) home run in the third inning separated a tie game and propelled Wilson to a non-conference win over Marymount on Monday. The win extends the Phoenix's program-record win streak to 10 games.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Marymount 2

Venue: Henninger Field

Records: Wilson 21-5, Marymount 13-12

How It Happened
  • The Saints were the first to light up the scoreboard after they rallied with two outs in the first. An infield error and a stolen base helped put them in position to score and a base hit just beyond third base allowed the runner to score. Wilson was quick to respond as Jordan McKenzie (Jr., White Plains, Md. / Southern Maryland) started the Phoenix off with a double to left center and Dean Mercer (Sr., Dunedin, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic) hit him in with a base hit up the middle in the bottom of the frame.
  • After a scoreless second, McKenzie found himself on base again after getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on an infield single by Michael Marrale (5th, Sykesville, Md. / Old Dominion). Buchanan followed up and sailed a pitch over the fence down the left field line for a 4-1 lead after his third homer of the season.
  • The Phoenix weren't down as Alex Seidleck (So., Crownsville, Md. / Indian Creek) kept the rally going with a double to right center. Similar to Mercer scoring McKenzie in the first, Doc Daniels (So., Deal Island, Md. / Crisfield) followed with a single up the middle to put the score at 5-1.
  • The Saints were able to score one in the top of the fourth, but the Blue and White got it back and then some in the bottom half. Jack Pachella (Fy., Wayne, Pa. / Radnor) led off the bottom half with a single down the left field line and eventually worked his way to third where McKenzie hit him in on a sac fly to center. Garrett Griebel (Fy., Kent Island, Md. / Kent Island), who laid down a perfect bunt single to third base to move Pachella, scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat.
  • From there it was all scoreless baseball. The Saints threatened on occasion, but left two runners stranded in the fifth and three in the eighth as the Phoenix worked out of the jams.
Inside The Numbers
  • Daniels got the start for the Phoenix and struck out six while allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits and one walk in 4.0 innings of work.
  • Jack Vener (Jr., Easton, Md. / St. Michael's) followed him and went the next 4.0 to record the decision and improve to 2-0 on the year. He added five strikeouts before Jacob Whittington (Gr., Salisbury, Md. / Univ. of the Sciences) threw the final frame and added two more strikeouts to give the Phoenix battery a baker's dozen on the day.
  • Mercer finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI. Daniels and Griebel also had multiple hit days for the Phoenix.
  • Eight different players recorded hits for the Phoenix. One of them was Seidleck who extended his hit streak to 13 games, on base streak to 17 games, and scored in his eighth-straight game.
Up Next
Wilson has a little bit of a break as it only has one game over the next 10 days. That will come Thursday then the Phoenix head to Penn State Berks. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
