Box Score (WESTMINSTER, Md.) – The Wilson field hockey team started the weekend off right as it got back in the win column with a road victory over McDaniel on Friday. It was a defensive battle both ways with only one goal scored in the game and snapped a three-game skid for the Blue and White.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 1, McDaniel 0
Venue: Gill Stadium
Records: Wilson 6-4, McDaniel 2-9
How It Happened
- It took both teams a while to generate any offense with each team getting just one opportunity in the first quarter. The Green Terror's solo chance came midway through the frame as a shot from Tenley Pelot was blocked following a penalty corner. Hannah Aker (Jr., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) eventually got a look for the Phoenix after a penalty corner by Brea Kelso (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg), but that attempt was also blocked late in the period.
- Both teams could only muster up a single shot in the second, but the Phoenix were able to make theirs count while the Green Terror's was once again well defended on another block. With 2:32 left in the half, Paige Ney (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) was able light up the scoreboard for her seventh goal of the season. Elizabeth Landon (So., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) set her up with an incredible entry pass from the right side that slipped through the defense. Ney was able to control the pass on the far post, spin by a defender, and cross up the goalie by going to the right post for the goal.
- Solo shots followed for both teams in the third before offense picked up in the final 15. McDaniel unleashed three consecutive shots about five minutes in with Allyson Shindler (Gr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern) making the save on the first and Jill Ahlgren (Sr., Mercersburg, Pa. / Mercersburg / Gettysburg) providing a defensive save on the second. The third was generated after a penalty corner, but McDaniel's resulting shot went wide.
- The Phoenix were able to counter with Kelso, Landon and Mia Brunet (So., Waynesboro, Pa. / Wanyesboro) taking shots just over a minute later. McDaniel's last chance effort came in the final two minutes with three more shots. The first off the corner was wide, while the second was saved by Shindler. The rebound came back out for another take, but that was blocked by the Phoenix defense.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson was outshot 9-6 overall in the game, but both teams managed three shots on goal.
- With Shindler making two saves and Ahlgren on the other, Shindler was able to record her second shutout of the season and first since a 2-0 clean sheet at Sweet Briar in the season opener.
- Ney has been a key cog in Wilson's offensive wheel all season as she has now scored in five of the six wins on the year.
