ABINGTON, Pa.- The Wilson College women's soccer team traveled this afternoon to take on Penn State Abington in a non-conference friendly. The Phoenix managed to come from behind to tie the Lions with a final score of 2-2.
How It Happened: Wilson had their first shot of the day in the third minute off a kick from senior
Morgan Wineburg (Phoenixville, Pa., Phoenixville) which was saved by the Lions goalkeeper. Penn State scored their first goal of the game after eight minutes hitting the back of the net after receiving a penalty kick to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the Lions score their second of the game extending the lead over Wilson. The Wilson defense held strong in the second half after facing five shots in the first ten minutes. Olivia Martin (Chambersburg, Pa., Chambersburg) scored a goal to chip away at the Lions' lead, off a pass from senior
Bailey Miller (Sterling, Va., Washington) to bring the score to 2-1 with twenty minutes remaining. Five minutes later off a pass from senior
Rachel Rodriguez (Hedgesville, W.Va., Hedgesville) freshman
Halley Shaffer (Sunbury, Pa., Line Mountain) secured the game-tying goal to bring the score to 2-2 with 15 minutes left to play. The Wilson defense locked in facing four more shots to hold on and secure the tie for the Phoenix.
Inside the Box Score: Shaffer led the team with five shots and one goal on the day. Sophomore
Rebecca Marakovitz (New Market, Md., Linganore) finished out the day with seven saves against nine attempts.
