(MIDDLETOWN, Pa.) – The season came to an end for the Wilson women's soccer team as it fell to Penn State Harrisburg in the United East Championship quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The No. 8 Phoenix were looking to upset the top-seeded Lions and limited their high-powered offense to just one goal, but were unable to answer on the opposite end.
The Basics
Scores: No. 8 Wilson 0, No. 1 Penn State Harrisburg 1
Venue: Penn State Harrisburg Turf Complex
Records: Wilson 4-14-1, Penn State Harrisburg 9-5-2
How It Happened
- From the start, Harrisburg had the advantage and pressed the Phoenix defense. The Lions had three corner kick chances and three offsides called against them in the opening 13 minutes with shots soon to come. They eventually broke through as Olivia Sgrignioli found the back of the net in the 25th minute. Wilson didn't go away quietly and had a chance to pull even late in the half with a corner kick. Breanna Oliviero (So., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) opened the set piece with prime placement and Ella Schmoyer (So., York, Pa. / West York) was able to get a head on it, but the attempt went wide right in the final seconds of the first half.
- The second half nearly mimicked the first as Harrisburg spend most of the frame on the attack. The Phoenix back line remained strong and saw Madison Ebersole (Jr., Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs) make seven saves in the half to keep it a one score game. Unfortunately Wilson was unable to counter and fell by the 1-0 score.
Inside The Numbers
- Ebersole finished the day with 12 saves. It's the fifth time she's had double-digit saves and finishes the year with 94.
