Phoenix and Falcons Split

CHAMBERSBURG. Pa. -The Wilson College softball team returned to action this afternoon for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader versus Cedar Crest College. The Phoenix (10-9-1, 4-2 CSAC) were victorious in game one ending with a 7-1 lead but the Falcons (8-9, 3-3 CSAC) would take game two with a final score of 4-2.

Game One: Super senior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) got the game started for the Phoenix, taking the Falcon's first three batters catching them looking to have a quick three up-three down situation. Potter continued with another three up three down in the top of the second inning. The Wilson offense would take control in the bottom of the second inning with graduate student  Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) notching a single off a bunt and then advancing to second on the throw. With Carty on second, senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) hit a deep one to right field to send Carty home and give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead moving forward. While Potter was handling the Phoenix defense, Wilson's offense reached home after hitting a double, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch to bring junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) across the plate and give the Phoenix a 2-0 over the Falcons. Cedar Crest looked to pull back into the game after scoring one in the top of the fifth inning but Wilson had other ideas. In the bottom of the fifth, the Phoenix offense got straight work putting up four runs off of six hits to extend their lead to 6-1 with time ticking down. Potter would help close out the game with a third three up- three-down situation at the top of the sixth to allow the team to extend the lead to its final 7-1.

Inside the Box Score: Wenger led the way for Wilson in game one with two runs, two hits, and one RBI on three at-bats. Junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) led the team in RBIs, earning two RBIs, two hits, and one run scored on three at-bat appearances.  Potter finished out game one with 13 strikeouts against 26 batters and allowed just four hits. Wilson finished game one with seven runs, on 11 hits, and one error.

Game Two: The Phoenix would enter game two with the same lineup looking for another win against the Falcons. Cedar Crest came out swinging to get an unearned runner home off a big hit to right-center field. Wilson would answer during their next at-bats earning one run to tie the game by graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) off a double from Barker to left field. The Falcons would take a 2-1 lead over the Phoenix at the top of the third inning, after capitalizing off a Wilson error and hitting a double to bring the runner home. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Carty would hit a homer out to center field to tie the game at two. Cedar Crest responded to the Phoenix home run with a two-run home run to secure a 4-2 lead over Wilson to close out the game.

Inside the Box Score: Roth and Carty had the lone runs for the Phoenix. Barker and sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) each had two hits on three at-bats. Wilson finished the game with two runs, six hits, and two errors.

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to Juniata College (6-14, 0-4 Landmark) on Friday, April 15 in Huntingdon, Pa for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
