Phoenix Edge Eagles on the Diamond

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team stepped out of conference to take on Juniata College ths afternoon. The Phoenix (12-9-1) topped the Eagles (8-16) in both games of the doubleheader, taking game one by a final of 5-4 in eight innings and winning game two by a score of 2-1.

How It Happened Game 1: Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started the game off strong in the circle for the Phoenix as the right-hander recorded eight of the first nine outs of the game via strikeout for the Phoenix. In the bottom of the third, the Phoenix took the lead on an RBI off the bat of sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School). Potter was cruising along until the fifth inning when the Eagles took advantage of a Phoenix error combined with a pair of hits to tie the score at 1-1. However, the Phoenix responded with a pair of runs on the top of the sixth. With two outs, back-to-back singles by Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) and Buttefield started the rally. Senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) followed with a hard hit ball that the Eagles defense couldn't handle and Carty and Butterfield crossed the plate for a 3-1 lead. With runners on first and second base and down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles got a double that cleared the bases to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to extra innings. In the eighth inning, the international tie-breaker was used which places on a runner on second base to start the inning. Carty smoked an RBI single to score Kosheba for a 4-3 advantage. Butterfield followed and reached on an error that allowed Carty to score a critical run to make it 5-3. The Eagles wouldn't go quietly as an RBI double off of Potter pulled the hosts within one run and put the tying run in scoring position. A hard line drive handled by shortstop Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) led to a double play to end the game and preserve the 5-4 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Carty and freshman Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia) paced the offense with 2 hits each. Butterfield and Kosheba each tallied 2 RBI. Potter pitched all 8 innings and allowed just 2 earned runs while striking out 14 Eagles.

How It Happened Game 2: The second game of the day, while lower scoring, was just as tight as the first game. The Eagles grabbed the lead in the third inning courtesy of a hit and a passed ball. A quick answer by the Phoenix came in the fourth as back-to-back singles by Carty and Butterfield started things off. Later in the inning with runners on first and third, the Phoenix put pressure on the defense and forced an error while trying to execute a double steal as Carty scored to tie the game at 1-1.In the fifth, the Phoenix scored what proved to be the winning run with a two out rally. Graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) singled down the left field line. Bradley followed with her own single while junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West) ripped an RBI single to center field to drive home Roth for a 2-1 lead. Junior pitcher Marina Monsalve (Corona, CA., Centennial) would work out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 2-1 win.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Bradley led the Phoenix with 3 hits while Barkley and Butterfield added 2 hits apiece. Monsalve got the win as she allowed just 1 earned run while striking out 3 in 7 innings of work.
