Potter Perfect as Softball Sweeps Gators

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Wilson College softball graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) twirled her second career perfect game in the opener of a CSAC double-header versus Notre Dame University of Maryland. Potter faced the minimum 15 batters, and struck out 8 of them, in the five inning game that ended due to the NCAA eight-run rule as the Phoenix (20-11-1, 12-2 CSAC) defeated the Gators (10-14, 7-9 CSAC) by a final score of 11-0. In the second game, the Phoenix rallied for a 15-7 win and Potter collected the win in relief as she allowed just 1 hit in 4 innings of work.

How It Happened Game 1: The Phoenix offense scored early and often in the opener. A two-out bases loaded triple by graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) cleared the bases and brought home Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South), junior Taylor Barker (Chehalis, WA., WF West), and sophomore Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) for a 3-0 lead. Another run came across in the bottom of the 2nd as senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) led off with a double to right-center and later scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 4-0. A blast over the left center field fence by Carty added to the lead in the bottom of the 3rd. The Phoenix put the game away in the bottom of the 4th as the team erupted for 6 runs on 5 hits. Singles by senior Delaney Glazer (Rochester, WA., Rochester), graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon), and Brookens set the stage for Barker to rip a bases clearing double down the left field line to grow the lead to 9-0. Carty followed with an RBI-single to score Barker for a 10-0 advantage. A run would score on a passed to ball to close out the scoring in the inning for the Phoenix. Potter closed out the perfect game with the assistance of a nice diving catch in left field by Roth.

Inside the Box Score Game 1: Carty paced the offense with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with 5 RBI, falling just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Barker went 1-for-2 with a double and 3 RBI. Potter struck out 8 and forced 4 fly outs and 3 ground outs while tossing just 59 pitches in her perfect game performance.

How It Happened Game 2: A tight game early turned into the second eight-run rule win of the day for the Phoenix. Again, the Phoenix grabbed the lead in the 1st inning as singles by Roth, Bradley, and Carty led to 3 runs with the big blow being a 2-out 2-RBI hit by Carty. In the 2nd inning, the Gators offense came to life by scattering 4 hits and taking advantage of 3 walks and a pair of Phoenix miscues to plate 7 runs. The Phoenix defense got out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning when sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) induced a 4-2-3 double-play to work out of the jam. Glazer, Kosheba, and senior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) started the bottom of the 2nd with consecutive singles to load the bases. An error by the Gators allowed 2 runs to score to make it 7-5. Brookens followed with a 2-RBI single of her own to tie the game at 7-7. Potter entered the game in the circle in the top of the 3rd and allowed her first and only hit of the day, but allowed no further damage. Leading 9-7 in the 5th, the Phoenix added 4 more runs. A 3-RBI triple by Wenger scored Kosheba, Butterfield, and Glazer. Brookens again followed with an RBI single to score Wenger making the score 13-7. The Phoenix would walk it off in the bottom of the 6th as RBI-doubles by Glazer and Wenger pushed the lead to 15-7 and ended the game courtesy of the NCAA eight-run rule.

Inside the Box Score Game 2: Wenger and Brookens each tallied 3 hits and 4 RBI. Glazer added 3 hits and an RBI. Potter picked up her 13th win of the season after tossing 4 innings and allowing 1 hit while striking out 5.
