Softball Handles Highlanders

LANGHORNE, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team hit the road for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader against the Highlanders of Cairn University. The Phoenix (18-9-1, 10-2 CSAC) swept the Highlanders (6-20, 3-9 CSAC) in two games by scores of 12-2 and 4-1.

Game One: In the top of the first inning, Wilson jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring a run off a few errors from Cairn. Graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started on the mound for the Phoenix, retiring the bottom of the first in order. In the top of inning number two, junior Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) drove in a run, off a sacrifice bunt, extending the Wilson lead to 2-0. After a pedestrian bottom of the second, the Phoenix offense continued to produce in the top of the third as senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal) slapped a double that added another run. Sophomore Haiden Brookens (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) added another run in the top of the fourth, while Wilson added one more run in the top of the fifth inning off another error, putting them up 5-0. Potter continued to deal, keeping the Highlander offense at bay throughout the game. Then, in the sixth inning, the Phoenix grabbed three runs off one hit and two errors. Brookens drove in the first run with an RBI triple, she would later come around to score off an error, while graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) also came around to score, extending their lead to 8-0. Wilson closed things out in the top of the seventh scoring four runs on four hits to give them a 12-2 win.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson added 12 runs on 12 hits with one error, while their opponent added two runs on five hits with nine errors. Potter threw a masterful complete-game seven innings with ten strikeouts. Kosheba went 3-5 with a double and two RBIs, Brookens went 2-5 with two RBIs, a double, and a triple, and graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) went 2-4 with two RBIs and a walk.

Game Two: The Phoenix wasted little time getting started in game two, as graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) drove in a run, putting Wilson up 1-0. Sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) got the start in game number two, making quick work of the Highlanders throughout the game. Later on, in the top of the fourth, Butterfield helped her cause with an RBI single to center field, pushing the score to 2-0. Then, in the top of the seventh, junior Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) slapped a single up the middle that drove in another run, while Brookens added another run with a sacrifice fly, as the Phoenix took a 4-1 victory in game two.

Inside the Box Score: Butterfield tossed a complete game, striking out seven batters while only allowing one run. Wenger went 2-3 with one RBI a triple and a stolen base, Roth finished 1-4 with one RBI and a stolen base, while Brookens added one hit along with one RBI, and a walk. Wilson came up with four runs on eight hits while limiting their opponent to one run, five hits, and one error.
