CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team played host to the visiting Giants of Keystone College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) showdown, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (16-9-1, 8-2 CSAC) swept the Giants (12-12, 6-4 CSAC) in a doubleheader, with a score of 9-1 in the first game and a score of 5-4 in the second.
Game One: Graduate student
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) started on the bump for Wilson, striking out all three batters in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore
Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School) drove in the first run of the game off an RBI single to center field.
Potter continued to deal throughout the game, retiring sides in the top of the second and third inning. In the bottom of the third, the Phoenix found some run support off a sacrifice fly from graduate student
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) and an RBI single from
Butterfield that put Wilson on top, 3-0. Later on, in the bottom of the fourth, graduate student
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) knocked in two more runs as the Phoenix extended their lead to 5-0. After sophomore
Haley Privett (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) drove in two more runs in the fifth, Keystone came back and took a run in the top of the sixth, making the score 7-1. Then, in the bottom half of the inning,
Carty ended things with a walk-off triple that drove in two runs, giving Wilson a 9-1 victory in game one.
Inside the Box Score: Potter threw for six innings, wracking up 12 strikeouts while only allowing three hits and one earned run.
Carty capped off her game going 1-2 with three RBIs and one walk, while
Butterfield,
Bradley, and
Privett each tallied two RBIs.
Butterfield went a perfect 3-3, while
Bradley and
Privett both went 1-3. The Phoenix added nine runs on ten hits with one error, while their opponent added one run on three hits with two errors.
Game Two: After working out of the top of the first inning, Wilson added a run in the bottom half of the inning off an RBI from
Butterfield. In the top of the second, Keystone managed to add four runs off five hits that put them on top 4-1. Later on, in the bottom of the third, the Phoenix cut the lead to two runs off a single down the left-field line from senior
Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal). Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Wilson came back and tied the game up at four off hits from
Carty and
Butterfield. Both teams remained deadlocked at four until
Kosheba ended the game with a single to center field, as the Phoenix took game two by a final score of 5-4.
Inside the Box Score: Butterfield and
Kosheba both went 2-4 with two RBIs, while
Carty went 1-3 with one RBI.
Bradley went a perfect 4-4 with a double, while graduate student
Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) went 2-4 with a stolen base.
Butterfield picks up the win, throwing for 5.2 innings and striking out three batters. Wilson scored five runs on 12 hits with five errors, while their opponent added four runs on eight hits with two errors.
Up Next: Wilson will hit the road for a CSAC doubleheader against Cairn (6-18, 3-7 CSAC) on Saturday, April 23, starting at 1:00 p.m.
