Softball Routs Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team hosted the University of Valley Forge today in CSAC action. The Phoenix (14-9-1, 6-2 CSAC) dominated the Patriots (4-12, 0-6 CSAC) in both games of the doubleheader, claiming the opener 8-0 and winning the nightcap 22-0.

How It Happened Game 1: While the offense was slow to start, graduate student Megan Potter (Hagerstown, MD., South Hagerstown) was dealing in the circle. Potter struck out the first nine batters faced and didn't allow a hit until the 4th inning. The first run of the game crossed for the Phoenix in the 2nd inning as graduate student Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) led off with a double and came around to score on a single by senior Jessica Kosheba (Marietta, PA., Donegal). In the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix offense woke up and tallied 5 runs on 4 hits in the frame. Freshman Ashley Stevens (Valencia, CA, Valencia) recorded an RBI single that scored sophomore Naomi Butterfield (Nampa, ID, Timberline High School). Later in the inning, Stevens and Kosheba would each score on a passed ball. A single by graduate student Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon)  to center field drove home juniors Kaesey Greene (Taneytown, MD, Francis Scott Key) and Alyssa Wenger (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) to make the score 6-0. The Phoenix tacked on single runs in the 5th and 6th innings. Kosheba smacked an RBI triple to left center in the 5th that scored Butterfield and graduate student Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) drilled a walk-off double to score Roth to mke the final score 8-0 in six innings.

Inside the Box Score: Kosheba paced the offense with 3 hits and a pair of RBI. Roth tallied 2 hits and 2 RBI. Potter improved to 9-2 on the season after allowing just 2 hits while striking out 13 batters. This marks the fifth time this season Potter has struck out at least 13 batters in a game.

How It Happened Game 2: Marina Monsalve (Corona, CA., Centennial) did her best to match Potter's effort from the first game as the junior didn't allow a hit in 3 innings of work while striking out 2. Offensively, the Phoenix took advantage of a pair of miscues by the Patriots defense and control issues in the circle in the 1st inning as 6 runs crossed the plate. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Haley Privett (Fayetteville, PA, Chambersburg Magnet) as the sophomore drilled a 2-RBI single that scored Greene and Kosheba to make the lead 6-0. In the 2nd inning, the Phoenix tacked on 10 more runs on 7 hits to grow their lead to an insurmountable 16-0. Bradley (2), Kosheba, Wenger, Carty, Butterfield, and Stevens recorded hits in the inning. Bradley doubled and tripled in the inning while driving in 3 runs. Wenger and Stevens each added 2-RBI singles in the frame. In their final at-bats of the game, the Phoenix added 5 more runs on 5 hits. Kosheba and sophomore Hannah Lyons (Dover, DE, Dover) singled and came home on a 2-RBI double down the left field line by Privett. The final run came across on an RBI double by freshman Karah Stiffler (McConnellsburg, PA, McConnellsburg) for the final score of 22-0.

Inside the Box Score: Wenger and Bradley each tied a season high with 3 hits and Bradley had a season high 5 RBI. Privett collected a career high 4 RBI in the victory. Kosheba and Steven also recorded multiple-RBI with 2 a piece.
