HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College women's lacrosse team traveled to take on the Cyclones of Centenary University as they opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (2-6, 1-0 CSAC) stormed past the Cyclones (1-2, 0-1 CSAC) by a final score of 19-4.
How It Happened: Centenary managed to score the first goal of the match, just over one minute into the game. A few minutes later, after causing a turnover, freshman
Emily Young (Fairfax, VA, Chantilly HS) beat the keeper and tied the game up at one. About four minutes later, sophomore
Kayla McHugh (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin HS) scored the second goal of the match, coming off a caused turnover from sophomore
Kenna Shearer (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg HS). The offense wouldn't stop there, as they kept things rolling with another goal from
Young, assisted by sophomore
Marissa Eisenhauer (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls), that put Wilson on top, 3-1. With less than a minute to go in the first quarter, freshman
Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) fired off a shot that beat the keeper and put the Phoenix in front, 4-1. Opening up the second quarter, Wilson scored three goals in less that two minutes.
Young scored the first, while
Lague and junior
Rachael Rementer (West Chester, PA, Henderson HS) tallied the next two, as the Phoenix jumped out to a 7-1 lead. About three minutes later, senior
Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) scored her first goal of the season that helped extend the Wilson lead. Shortly after, the Phoenix scored another three goals, that ballooned their lead to 11-1.
Singer scored her second-straight goal, while
Young record her third and
McHugh her second.
Young notched one more goal, assisted by
Singer, as Wilson went into half time leading, 12-1. The defense turned things up in the second half as the Phoenix came up with several turnovers and denied a flurry of shots from the Cyclones. About midway through the quarter,
Lague added another goal, assisted by
Young, extending the lead to 13-1. With less than three minutes left in the third,
Singer recorded her hat trick with another goal that put Wilson on top 14-1 going into the final quarter.
Lague,
McHugh, and freshman
Hope Sanders (Hanover, PA, New Oxford HS)all scored in the final quarter as the Phoenix opened up CSAC play with a 19-4 victory.
Inside the Box Score: Lague paced the offense, tallying six goals in the match, while
Young scored five, and
McHugh and
Singer both recorded three goals in the match.
Sanders and
Rementer each added one goal.
Young and
Lague led the team with four and three caused turnovers, while
Singer and
Eisenhauer both tallied two assists. Sophomores
Delaney Fulfer (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle HS) and
Krystal Kienast (Purcellville, VA, Loudon Valley HS) both spent time at goalie, combining for seven saves. Altogether, Wilson combined for 39 shots, 23 ground balls, 18 draw control, and went 16-20 on clear opportunities.
