Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Cyclones

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College women's lacrosse team traveled to take on the Cyclones of Centenary University as they opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (2-6, 1-0 CSAC) stormed past the Cyclones (1-2, 0-1 CSAC) by a final score of 19-4.

How It Happened: Centenary managed to score the first goal of the match, just over one minute into the game. A few minutes later, after causing a turnover, freshman Emily Young (Fairfax, VA, Chantilly HS) beat the keeper and tied the game up at one. About four minutes later, sophomore Kayla McHugh (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin HS) scored the second goal of the match, coming off a caused turnover from sophomore Kenna Shearer (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg HS). The offense wouldn't stop there, as they kept things rolling with another goal from Young, assisted by sophomore Marissa Eisenhauer (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls), that put Wilson on top, 3-1. With less than a minute to go in the first quarter, freshman Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) fired off a shot that beat the keeper and put the Phoenix in front, 4-1. Opening up the second quarter, Wilson scored three goals in less that two minutes. Young scored the first, while Lague and junior Rachael Rementer (West Chester, PA, Henderson HS) tallied the next two, as the Phoenix jumped out to a 7-1 lead. About three minutes later, senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) scored her first goal of the season that helped extend the Wilson lead. Shortly after, the Phoenix scored another three goals, that ballooned their lead to 11-1. Singer scored her second-straight goal, while Young record her third and McHugh her second. Young notched one more goal, assisted by Singer, as Wilson went into half time leading, 12-1. The defense turned things up in the second half as the Phoenix came up with several turnovers and denied a flurry of shots from the Cyclones. About midway through the quarter, Lague added another goal, assisted by Young, extending the lead to 13-1. With less than three minutes left in the third, Singer recorded her hat trick with another goal that put Wilson on top 14-1 going into the final quarter. Lague, McHugh, and freshman Hope Sanders (Hanover, PA, New Oxford HS)all scored in the final quarter as the Phoenix opened up CSAC play with a 19-4 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Lague paced the offense, tallying six goals in the match, while Young scored five, and McHugh and Singer both recorded three goals in the match. Sanders and Rementer each added one goal. Young and Lague led the team with four and three caused turnovers, while Singer and Eisenhauer both tallied two assists. Sophomores Delaney Fulfer (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle HS) and Krystal Kienast (Purcellville, VA, Loudon Valley HS) both spent time at goalie, combining for seven saves. Altogether, Wilson combined for 39 shots, 23 ground balls, 18 draw control, and went 16-20 on clear opportunities.
